I have my timer to go on at 4:15pm and go off at 11:00. It does shut off, but goes back on at 4:15 am. What am I doing wrong?

What kind of timer are you talking about? Some timers only operate on a 12-hour window. If yours has a 24 hour window, try changing it to a military time format. For example:
On: 4:15pm = 1615
Off: 11pm = 2300
If you do not have that ability and it only indicates am or pm then program the on time first and ensure it says PM then program the off time and again also ensure it says PM.

How can the orbit mdoel 57894 be progrmed for multiple start times?

The product manual is confusing... how do you set 1-5 am and 2-12 pm and 3-5 pm? The manual says to press program button to choose A B or C programs, but does not give steps for programming or when to press enter to confirm setting... or say which position the dial should be in when programming.

57894 lets you program separately for each station...turn dial to Run Time and use arrow keys to select a station. Press enter or arrow keys to advance to next station.
57894 offers 'select a station', 'pick days of the week or interval between watering for that station', 'duration of watering for that station'. But picking days of the week is not the same as setting exact times 1-5 am and 2-12 pm.
The dial is set to auto for programs to operate..
Don't forget to activate battery located top right on face of timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Orbit-57894.pdf

So the 57894 has more options than a 24-hour analog sprinkler timer that repeats same cycle each day with 14-day-skipper.

Problem programming timer settings. Is it supposed to be random or continuous?

1) Copy following link to identify timer and download possible manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#50006

2) How to set analog timers by experimenting with features:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-set-timers.html

3) 50001 timer is not random vacation timer like the 50003.
50000 series timers by Woods have 1 year limited warranty, and they are a new design released this year. However the analog timer design has been around for many years.

4) If timer is acting randomly, then
a) timer is defective,
b) the override switch is not fully positioned at 'timer on,'
c) segments are not lifted fully in position,

5) ... other more remote causes: outlet might not test 80% rated voltage?, outlet might have reversed polarity?

5) Try timer on different outlet with different light.

6) As the timer dial rotates, the segments push small lever, and the lever moves switch that turns lights on-off. I suppose if this lever was broken or switch was broken, then timer would act more randomly.

I have a holiday timer LW28080. Following instructions to the letter the unit did not go on at the set time. The manual works but not the timer. Does the time actually have to start on the first day...

LW28080 is NCC brand digital power center.
Copy following link to identify timer and download manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#0050024
Programming should start on the day you selected for Program 1 ON. So if Tues was selected, timer should start Tuesday.

Use paper clip, and push in Reset button for 2 seconds. Repeat. Always reset digital timers before programming to clear memory glitches.

Plug timer in for 10 minutes to charge battery.
Be sure to set current time with correct day, hour am-pm and minute.
Each ON program requires OFF program
Set program 1 ON and then set program 1 OFF.
Make sure selected day(s) of operation match for both ON and OFF settings.
Check am-pm conflicts in programming.
Avoid 12:00, to avoid am-pm confusion. Use 12:01 or 11:59
Avoid programming overlaps and conflicts that cause timer not to function as expected.

When programming is finished, press current time button to return to current time.
It appears timer is ready for programmed operation at this point.
Install Mi-MH battery that comes with timer.
Do not exceed watt rating.
This timer comes with 1 year limited warranty and can be expected to last 1 or 2 seasons, and probably quit season 3.

Self adjusting in wall timer

Timer is not known.
Copy following links to identify timer and download manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html
In the manual, you will see directions for resetting timer.

If resetting does not work, then review timer programming carefully to make sure there are no conflicts in the programming such as overlapping days, or inconsistent am-pm, etc
