GE washer model GLWN2800D0WS works fine but now final spin cycle takes over an hour. Don't know if timer or motor control is the problem.

If wash speed/action seem ok and spin speed seems ok which means the integrated motor/control is ok, then likely its the timer.

It's going to cost you if your not handy as the problem is more than likely a small board which sends a message to a relay, but not the relays of the good old days.

SOURCE: GE Washing machine won't spin in rinse cycle

Possible your outlet filter is blocked. This requires cleaning depending on your usage. Clean this out and refit. Good luck. Plug off the wall first.

SOURCE: Final spin cycle for kenmore 417.40042990

This is an interesting problem. How long does it have to sit before you can get it to spin? Can you let it go through the cycle and then immediatly put it into spin and it work? This machine will not spin until the pressure switch senses the water has drained. So you could have a slow drain, a clogged pressure hose, or faulty switch. A clogged hose or faulty switch would usually cause it to fill with more water than normal also. A slow drain is most likely, check the drain hose when it is draining and see if it is putting out a strong flow or just slowly draining. I think you will find it to be slow. This will cause it to take up all or most of the spin time trying to drain the water. If it is slow draining, check the pump for a sock or some obstruction. If the drain is good, remove the top and remove the rubber hose from the pressure hose and blow through it. You should be able to blow through it easily. A restricted pressure hose will cause the machine to think it has water in it after it has drained.

Kenmore 110 Spin Cycle

Assuming that this is a basic top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer it seems as if the problem is likely in the timer.

The transmission and draining are controlled by the motor which gets it's power through the timer. If the timer isn't advancing once it gets to the spin cycle area, the motor keeps getting power, the machine keeps spinning and only by pushing in the control knob will the motor stop.

Here are a couple of places to look at how the machine works and parts for a basic Kenmore washer.

Sears parts site:

Enter your model number and you'll see a number of sub catagories for the washer components.

Whirlpool Installation and maintenance PDF.

This is a public domain Whirlpool manual describing how the washer works and a good troubleshooting section.

I hae a Whirlpool LSR8233EQ1 Top loading washer.

If you can catch it running while in the spin cycle but not spinning ( put a butter knife or screwdriver in the lid switch hole ) and wiggle the timer knob . If it starts spinning during this process , the timer needs replaced . Sometimes though , when a washer does everything BUT spin and you hear the motor running , the transmission is the problem .

GE Adora front load washer overloaded now won't start

Washers - Resetting Electronic Controls on a Washer

If there is a pause in the washer cycle, the controls will lock up. The pause can occur because of a power failure or it was put in the test mode at the factory.

Also, if the washer was stopped before the cycle was complete or the consumer has pushed the stop/pause button to temporarily stop the cycle and the cycle is not reset. Over a period of 24 hours, the washer will pump out and spin, but will stay in the final spin.

To correct the situation, shut off the circuit breaker for 30 seconds or unplug the washer, then turn the timer knob around and back to any position other than final spin. Verify the water is turned on and restore power. This should resolve the issue.
