Curdy, it almost sounds like your lid switch is loose or fractured and the lid actuator is not making the switch. Check this out first and post back...Catriver.

SOURCE: replacing lid switch

someone, Im not finding that model number. Going by the first six digits Im assuming that this is a regular top loader and not an Oasis washer. If so, remove the end caps on the consol by pulling them off. Remove the screws under each end cap and flip the consol up. Unplug the lid switch connector and snap springs holding the cabinet on. The whole cabinet will pull forward and you can get at the lid switch. Check out the pics and post back...Catriver.

THe most likely cause for this is either the lid switch or the timer itself sticking.

I HAVE A TOP LOADER WHIRLPOOL LXR7144EQ1. i HAVE TO PUSH DOWN ON THE LID AFTER CLOSING IT OR HAVE SOMETHING HEAVY ON TOP FOR IT TO CONTINUE TO WASH. WHATS THE PROBLEM?

It sounds like the lid switch, which senses when the lid is closed, needs adjusting. You will need to remove the top of the machine, locate the switch and move it closer to the lid actuator.

Hello Dbriner,
It would appear that the lid switch is defective and is in need of replacement. I included a video showing basically how to replace it (It is a series 80 machine but that is minor). The steps are the same.

Your part can be found here for $29.65 +Shipping

Flashing F what is this

This is usually too much detergent or severely out of balance load. Unplug the washer, this will allow you to open the door to re-balance or eliminate very heavy items from the drum. Close door re-plug and restart machine. If this doesn't do the trick repeat the unplug and reset the dial to rinse/spin to clear excess detergent once finished restart normal wash cycle.

How does a top loader work?

You lift the lid and load your washing into it. They you select the wash cycle, select the type of fabrics you're washing and the temperature and then start the wash cycle.

Then's all kinds of variation, but generally, there's a timer and a thermostat that control a lot of the cycle behaviour like washing times and water temperatur, if their outside the thermostat calibration, the washing machine may not continue to the next cycle until the calibrated temperature registers on the thermostat.

Was there anything else you wanted to know about top loaders?

Wachine machine bangs when on spin cycle.

Unless your top loader is set firmly on concrete and leveled to perfection, the force of a heavy wash load spinning in excess of 1000rpm will create a bit of vibration and noise.A firm footing is your best defense against to much movement.
Also due to the earlier movements during the spin cycle, the shocks that are used to dampen the spin cycle might have been broken or damaged.
If the problem persists inspite of proper levelling, please do check for the shocks or might have them replaced them for good.

Whirlpool washer stops for no reason.

i would be concerned teh the door/lid switch is not being activated, or is loosing contact withthe swtch mid wash causing unit to shut off. unitll the lid is lifted and closed to make better contact.. tyhe activator for the lid switch is actually the underside of the lefthand lid hinge. so if your able toreah under the lid while open you feel the metal lever, as you push and pull hte lid youll feel the lever move as well. with a hollow shafted screwdriver/1/4 nutdriver. place the driver over the metallever andslightly bend it toward the rear of the uni, so it makes better contact with the switch mounted tothe underside of the main top assembly
