How to remove the cover from an IBM selectric.

First remove the platen. There is a lever at each end of the platen push them down and remove the platen.
Then inside the case on both sides are levers, pull them towards you and remove the case. The levers are inside the case right against it.

Could be a lot of things. Most likely is a motor belt. It's not likely an untrained person could change it. To remove the case there are latches on the rt. & l. sides, levers on the insides of case move themto the front and remove case.
