SOURCE: Ribbon not advancing on Selectric II typewriter
on the left far side of the ribbon there is a white vertical post. the ribbon should be on the left side of that. also make sure you turn the ribbon the direction of the arrow (on the cassete) otherwise will need professional repair

check the link between the keyboard and the actual switch that turns the machine on.
SOURCE: How to change the ribbon on an IBM selectric II
If this is acorrecting T/W there is ared lever to the rt. of the ribbon rotate it to the front of the ribbon, pull the old ribbon up and off, drop the new ribbon on the ribbon deck, thread the ribbon to the left of the shock wire right where it comes out of the cassette, thread through the lift guides on either side of the element, turn the knob ccw to take up the slack, check to be sure the ribbon is not folded or twisted, move the red lever back.

You haven't told what model of Selectric. If it is a selectric II or III, there is an orange lever on the carrier that you must pull to one side. The correction tape has a silver lever next to the take-up spool that you must pull outward.
