I'd say that just based on its age alone it's due for a tune up. Plugs, filters, seals (rubber gaskets)...the whole shebang. Remember, at it's core it's just a small engine and needs the same tlc as a lawn mower or quad. Take care and good luck!

Sounds like it may be drawing air around the intake somewhere. Let it idle and spray around carefully with wd-40 until it speeds up. This will reveal the leak.

Cleaning the carb bowl is not enough make sure you pull out the main jet and clean it out real good. If it starts with starting fluid then it is definitely a fuel problem.
