When I hit it nothing happens on my Microsoft 5050 keyboard

Try reseating the key board.
Check whether the keys are stuck especially the shift,alt,caps lock.
Hav you spilled any liquid on the keyboad.
Try uninstalling any software you installed for the keyboard and remove it from Device Manager (Click Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click OK).
Reboot and see if that helps anything. Also, check the right shift and make sure it isn't stuck and check the keyboard settings in the Control Panel
Update the keyboad software from the microsoft website.
Pleae mntion the model number of the keyboard to help us know more about the keyboard.
You can try holding down function key and press f11.
Control Panel -> Regional and language settings -> Tab: Languages,
Button: Details, and add a US Keyboard.

It can be a couple of things. 1. Try replacing the keyboard & mouse's batteries with fresh batteries. 2. Try moving the wireless receiver closer to the keyboard. 3. Make sure the receiver is not located too close to other electronics like a tv or dvd player. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.

On 32-bit machines: Use the windows search feature to find "hidserv.dll." Once located, copy the file and paste it into the %systemroot%\system32\ directory. you need to isolate this issue first.
where are you typing? inside IE or in MSWord?
If both has issues then try typing in the DOS Command Window. If same issue try to boot in safe mode and check if you will still be getting same issue in safe mode. If all yes try to check the bios and update it by downloading the latest bios version from the support site from dell.
