Most likely one or more defrost components have failed. Defrost control / timer, defrost thermostat, defrost heater

Can often be caused by ice blocking the cold air path air from the freezer. You may not be able to see the ice buildup but it's likely to be around the evaporator fins and could be due to a blocked ice-melt drain tube.
Probably worth emptying the freezer contents into a chilly bin or well insulated box (to keep it frozen) and leaving switched off with the freezer door open for half a day to let any ice melt, then see it it has started working again. If there is lots of water in the freezer after this you might want to find the drain tube (usually comes out above the compressor motor) and clear it (plastic coated flexible spring line for hanging curtains is good for this).

You have done a good job of attempting to diagnose by process of elimination, but this is a more complex system. I have provided some links below to assist you in diagnosing your problem. Links courtesy of www.repairclinic.com.

1. Ascertain that the evaporator fan is operational. This may be controlled by the Door Switch, (No.4) and could cause the fan to be inoperable.
2. Ascertain that the Fresh Food compartment light goes off when door is closed.
3. The air diffuser may be faulty by not controlling the air flow from the freezer properly

Tip: Always maintain dual temperature control settings at equal or +/- 1 setting position.

How refrigerators work:

You will need to verify operation of the following components listed below:

1. Evaporator fan motor
2. Air diffuser assembly
3. Light switch for refrigerator/freezer light
4. Door switch

Assuming that your fridge is set at max thermostat setting, and still it cools to 8 degrees only. It only mean
one thing, and that is have your refrigerant level check,
and have it loaded. E-mail to us your comments.

My freezer works fine it's my refiidgator doesn't

Check that foods in freezer are not blocking the vent which allows cold air to refrigerator. Newer refrigerators have only one cooling unit in the freezer. Cold air must be free to enter the refrigerator section.

We have a Kitchenaid superba side by side. The freezer is working fine, but the refrigerator isn't cold. I have vacuumed the coils at the top of the model, but didn't solve the problem. I can...

The cooling normally comes from the freezer side, through cooling tubes. There should be a fan either blowing or sucking the air through these cooling tubes. So the first thing you should do is verify that the evaporator fan is turning and then see if you feel air flow in both compartments. If you have air flow in the freezer but not the refrigerator side, then the cooling tube must be blocked.

Most of the time the blockage is ice or frost, and you will need to open up the inner back panel of the freezer to get to the cooling tube. Look for an opening under the evaporator. Suggest a hair dryer to defrost the tube.

Freezing in refrigerator

Inside the fresh food compartment on top left there is something called an air baffle. It runs between the freezer and fresh food compartment and its purpose is to electrically control the amount of cold air coming from the freezer. Sometimes they freeze open and will not close. So you may need to turn off the refrigerator during the time you examine it. Look for ice blocking the movement of the baffle damper. Sometimes just one time clearing the problem is all you need to fix it. Let me know what you find and if you are able to get it going again, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer too cold frosty, and refrigerator section too warm

Sounds like a defrost problem if the evaporator is frozen over. If it's just Ice blocking air transfer on a top freezer model, then it's a blocked defrost drain.

Kenmore Side by Side Refrigerator, freezer doesn't work, refrigerator works

Unless specifically made for use in a garage most units won't work properly. The owners manual should say what the temp range for proper operation is (usually 55F is the low range). This is because the refrigerator section doesn't need to be "cooling" to maintain 37F if the temps on the outside are below 55F. These things are made to work in a 70F room and will not work properly if under 55F. Stupid thing thinks it's cold enough so it will never turn on, the refer section will stay cold/cool due to outside temps but since the compressor never runs the freezer will just be the same temp as the refer section (at best). Sorry, but in order for a freezer or refrigerator to work in an unheated space it must have the temp control device controling the freezer section NOT the fresh food section. In other words, that model will not work in a garage unless the temps are above 55F always.
