If its an android system you should see SYM (BOLS) in the bottom left corner when you have the keyboard displayed.
Failing that you may have to change the keyboard in Settings
> Language and input

had the same issue. I found the solution: messages>create message>new SMS>put the cursor on the message box> press * >input method: Abc. Hope it helps!
