Keep getting code 25 then cold water with Rinnai tankless water heater.

Sometimes when running hot water the Rinnai tankless water heater periodically starts beeping and flashing code 25 and the water starts running cold. I take the drain tube and bend it different directions till water runs out, then it starts to get hot again.

SOURCE: Rinnai tankless water heater code 12

12 - Flame Failure or Poor Ground

1. Immediate code 12 is usually a defective gas valve, power supply problem, or defective fan motor wiring harness.

2. If code 12 occurs after a few seconds it indicates that proper operation was established, but then stopped unexpectedly.

3. Verify that fuel is being supplied to the unit.

4. Check for proper electrical ground. Unit must use a grounded power supply.

5. Check for flue blockage on inlet or exhaust.

Q. FA - Gas leakage error, gas valve circuit not closing properly
A.

  1. Disconnect power supply cord and check wire connections on gas valve and the two connectors on the control board.
  2. Flow water out of a hot water tap above the minimum activation point of .8GPM. Measure voltage at the gas valve wire connector. The connector should measure 24VDC between the left pair of wires and 24VDC between the right pair of wires when the unit is operating. If voltage is not correct, contact Bosch Water Heating for further instruction.
  3. Gas valve may be defective, contact Bosch Water Heating for further instruction.
Q. EA - No flame ionization detected with water flow
A.
  1. Verify that all manual gas shut off valves are open.
  2. Verify gas type (See Fig. 2 in installation manual) corresponds with the type of gas supplied to the heater.
  3. Reset error code and open a water tap to cycle the heater in an effort to purge air from gas line (especially on new installations). Cycling hot water tap on and off multiple times may be necessary. If heater still faults with EA error code, have a licensed gas technician properly purge air out of the gas line leading to the water heater.
  4. Verify the three yellow wire connections to the set of electrodes (underside of the burner assembly) are secure.
  5. Verify gas pressure meets specifications outlined in chapter 3.8. See Bulletin TWH-G2-03.
  6. Verify venting meets specifications outlined in chapter 3.6 of the installation manual. Improper venting may cause premature failure of the flame sensor rod.
  7. Observe inside the viewing window of the heat exchanger when a hot water tap is opened. Sparking should be followed by a steady blue flame. If not, Call Bosch Water Heating with observations. Readings from above gas pressure test will be required.
Q. C1 - Fan rotation too low on startup
A.
  1. Disconnect power supply cord. Check wire connections on back side of fan and the two large wire connectors on the control unit. Removal of lower access panel on control unit is necessary to access connectors.
  2. Verify that supply voltage is 120VAC and is properly grounded.
  3. Verify that venting meets specifications outlined in chapter 3.6 of the installation manual. Long vent lengths, venting with more than three elbows, blocked vent or combination venting may cause this failure. Verify backdraft flapper inside flue gas collector is not stuck shut.
  4. Check gas pressure. See Bulletin TWH-G2-03. Low gas pressure may cause the fan to change its speed to meet desired temperature.
  5. Possible defective control unit. Call Bosch Water Heating for further instructions.

SOURCE: No hot water

The code # 11 is a code that warns of "no ignition" and the causes of this error code are too many to list. I would suggest that a qualified tech. perform a diagnostic test and repair.

This is not a task for the "do it yourselfer"

did you check the filters on the the water valves, i am not exactly sure about your codes that are shoeing but if you could read it and post them, i know on some of the units 76 means there is low water pressure and the filters are behind 2 caps one on each side above the shut off valve take off the caps and remove the screens, clean them and replace them ,, make sure you turn off the water on both side first or you will get wet

Runs out of hot water

I wonder if you have this problem below caused by a drop in water pressure from someone flushing a toilet or a washing machine. I would call the company to remedy this issue.

17. What is a cold water sandwich effect? The term “cold water sandwich effect” is a term that is used to describe the introduction of cold water into the hot water supply line during frequent on/off operation of an instantaneous water heater. The cold water sandwich effect, when present, appears as a momentary drop in hot water temperature as it is discharged from a hot water supply outlet (i.e. shower, tub, or faucet). This phenomenon is present in the operation of all instantaneous, tankless style, water heaters, but is minimized with the high tech design of Rinnai water heaters.
The technology built into the Rinnai water heaters is designed to minimize the cold water sandwich effect. Rinnai water heaters are microprocessor controlled and when water flow through them ceases, they remain in a “ready to fire state” for approximately 1 minute. If water flow through a Rinnai water heater begins within the first minute following water flow stoppage, the water heater will fire back up within 1 to 2 seconds. This minimizes the cold water sandwich effect that would otherwise be experienced with a low tech tankless water heater. It should be noted that the cold water sandwich effect cannot be removed completely from tankless style water heaters. The safety standards developed to insure the safe operation of water heaters require a delay in the ignition sequence of all gas water heaters.
While the cold water sandwich effect cannot be completely eliminated from standard plumbing systems, it can be eliminated from plumbing systems that have a supply and return hot water circulating system. Rinnai has developed 2 methods to eliminate the cold water sandwich effect in residential hot water circulating systems.
The first (and preferred) method to remove the cold water sandwich from circulating systems utilizes a small electric tank water heater (powered up) that is used with a dual purpose. The small water heater acts as a mixing tank to eliminate the cold water sandwich effect from the Rinnai water heater and it uses its electric heating element to offset the heat losses from the hot water circulating system.
The second method to remove the cold water sandwich from circulating systems utilizes a small 2 to 6 gallon storage tank installed on the hot water outlet of the Rinnai water heater. This tank acts as a mixing tank to blend the cold water sandwich with hot water and eliminating its effect at fixtures.
