The heating element is on the bottom of the unit and there should not be an issue with that. If the damage came from it being dropped, there is a chance the element got knocked lose.

SOURCE: Outside of Crock Pot Extremely Hot....Is This Normal?

This is not normal. Thermal switch is not functioning correctly. Wiring inside not easy to replace. Crock pots cause a lot of home fires. Cheaper to simply buy a new one.

Is the pot available - we broke the one we have

As long as the outer metal pot is intact, you can purchase a replacement crock for your slow cooker, often for under $20.

Had a large crockpot, outside got reeeeely hot so I junked it but kept the liner (has a plastic lid). Wondering if I can use the liner in an oven, and/or range top (gas or electric). Anyone know? Bottom...

Problem solved 1/25/10: went to www.crock-pot.com/customerservice and started reading. Stoneware liners are usable in ovens and microwaves (up to 400 deg), and range tops. It didn't say to, but I plan to put a wire grid (as used for some double-boilers) to avoid direct heat.

Rival crock pot

Yes, it's not unusual for the outside to be too hot to touch. A slow cooker won't get as hot as a bare burner on the stove, but it still gets hot enough to cook meat. The outside has a bit of insulation, but it still may get hot enough to cause pain, melt a bread bag, etc. Be sure and place it where no one will accidentally touch it.

Hamilton beach 6qt electric crock pot about 4 years old

Call Hamilton Beach. This crock pot was recalled because of threat of severe burn. My handle broke and I dropped my lid. When I called to buy a new lid, I was told of the recall. They will send you an envelope. You then send back the end of the cord. I got a whole new cooker, crock and lid in the mail. : )
