SOURCE: dyson animal, have to hold ON switch for it to work
Pull the wand out of the Vac. Need to use a small Torx bit to take out 2 screws hidden behind the wand storage. Once screws are out, there are 4 push-clips which need to be un-latched. Pry the power panel off and you will expose the two switches (one for power, one for the brushes). Push the power switch down and it should "release" and go back to clicking when pushed. Re-assemble. Took about 5 minutes to fix.

this may sound harsh and i apologize in advanc. but dyson vacuums are just over priced pieces of junk. you would have gotten better quality out of a 39.00 bissell and now to the repair. the machine is made of cheep plastic which wears and breaks over time. the power switch, and button will have to be replaced which will cost you rougly around 70 bucks. and that is if you do it yourself. the beater bar stop could be a broken engage bar as well. meaning when you turn the nob to hard wood or to floors it turns the beater bar off, but when you turn it to carpet it kicks it back on. the mechanism that does that could be broke as well. i would make dyson warranty the vacuum if it is still under warranty. if it isnt i will say it is not worth the repair costs to keep it. im sorry to have to say this but they are disposable vacuums they are not built with quality.
SOURCE: power switch will not engage.
Possibly the micro switch is faulty or the switch isn't in its proper position in the machine. It could be a cable problem too. An electrical continuity test (with the power off) should prove where the fault is. hope this helps.
SOURCE: power button not engaging...vacuum will not stay
The power button is worn out and needs to be replaced. That vacuum is pretty simple. So even if you don't know how to take it apart it shouldn't cost much to have it repaired.
