I have a mid 60's Niagra furnace. I need to replace the combination fan and limit control. It has an 11 inch insert. I need to know if the insert length matters. I found an 8 inch control on Amazon.

The length of the probe does matter, it has to do with the design of the heat exchanger, ect,, will it operate?? yes it probably will, but it is more of a safety issue. Official answer is use the same length,, some people do fudge the length, but it is not recommended. I know I'm dancing around the point,, because it is a liability issue.. If you can, really try to use the exact replacement as the factory part. Sincerely, Paul

SOURCE: need the cubic inches for the return air duct

For proper minimum opening you need to do duct calculation. This is not a typical math equation for the typical homeowner. And unfortunately alot of contractors do not take the time to calculate this.
If you insist on doing this yourself...... I would recommend the largest opening that a common filter will fit. probably 20" by 25". Going to big on a return air will never hurt. But going to small will.
20" x 25" will work safely 95% of the time. But... If you are running airconditioning that is 5 tons in size, you will need the design a return air system that will feed from BOTH sides of the furnace.

If you are just sizing the trunk line you should use a ductulator to calculate the minimum size. A good rule of thumb would be to size the "return air" trunk 1 - 1 1/2 times the size of the supply trunk line.

SOURCE: blower fan running constant after new fan and

Here's my best shot.
Check the temperature settings for the fan switch.
The low OFF setting should be about 100 degrees.
The ON setting should be around 150 degrees and this is the setting that "makes" the ON contacts.
The HIGH LIMIT setting should be about 180 degrees.
If these are set, can you use a meter to see if the FAN ON contacts are closed?
Lastly, it appears that one hot line should go to one side of the blower and the other hot line should go to the bottom FAN terminal with the other side of the blower being fed by wiring from the top FAN terminal.
Good Luck. Gary

I have a rheem gas furnace and one of the limit switches tripped and I need to know where to locate them--they are some where in the burner compartment I just can't find them.

Depending on the age of your furnace the limit swithes are part of the control board and are not individually serviced. You will need to replace control board. On the older units that used a seperate fan and limit the only thing you could do was change temperature settings. Hope this helps. Thanks

Trane ac, inside blower does not stop. The heater stops, the Ac compressor stops, but the inside blower does not, this the thermostat set at auto. Regards, Faylbp

Hi, I want you to try a couple of things for me if you will. Go to the thermostat and remove the cover. Now if you have a small bladed screw driver, loosen all the screw on this next section and remove it. Turn off power to the unit, if it is a split system, turn off the indoor unit. Once you remove this section which is the thermostat you will see the subbase and wiring. Take the red wire loose and off of the terminal. You may have a red jumper wire going from RH to RC. Remove the red wire coming into the stat at either point. Give it a minute and see if the fan stops now. If it does, you will need to replace the stat. If not, depending on the age of your unit, if your high limit/fan control tripped, that will be the problem. Some units have a fan control combination high limit that trips causing the fan to run all the time. You need to take a look at your heater section at the front of it to see what kind you have. If it is a combination fan/limit. it will be inserted into the fire box. It is square looking box with a cover on it some with a auto/ manual button on them Sometimes the contats will stick causing the fan to run. They can be removed with power off and cleaned up. They will have a dial with a temperature reading on them which tells the fan to come on when it reaches this set-point and off when it cools down. It may have stuck closed. Check what I have told you with the stat, and this and let me know the age of heater and if it is a split system Trane with a remote condenser and furnace located somewhere else. Get back to me on this.

Blower opperation on gas furnace

How long does the burner stay on before the limit takes it out. The board has a delay for the fan in heat and it may be to long. If your unit had cycled on high limit to much it may have a bad limit switch. The limit is so low it cuts out before the fan has a chance to come on. See on the board if has an adjustable time deley. Should 30 60 90 set to thirty. Keep in touch rus

Main blower stays on, burner fan on intermitantly,

All gas furnaces have a fan control of some sort. Either a mechanical fan control where there is a temperature probe that reaches into the heat exchanger compartment thru a hole in the panel that separates the control part of the furnace(this would be the front of the furnace where all the controls are) from the heat exchanger. This type of control is either a small black plastic control about 4 inches by 2 inches and about 1 1/2 inches thick secured to the panel with 2 screws. Or it is a slightly larger silver colored control that should have a pull off cover. It may say Honeywell on it. Either way the control will need replacing.
The other type of fan control is a solid state control board. This will most likely be located in the indoor fan compartment. It should be located under a covered control box. The box with all the wires going into it. This board will also need to be replaced if your furnace uses this type of fan control. You will need to bring your furnace model and serial number to a dealer that sells your brand of furnace or go online to a parts dealer that carries parts for your furnace. Hope I was of help to you! Good luck!

Furnace starts, but no heat nor fan operation.

If youe burners fire off it's not the transformer. It suonds like the fan/limit control. Try to turn the fan switch on the thermostat to the on position and see if the fan comes on, if it does leave it on and turn the heat on and see if the heat works that way. If so it would be the combination fan/limit control.
