1/2 horse Wayne shallow well jet pump in house been getting slow to start, now quit altogether. Can a new pressure switch remedy? Or a worse problem?

Clean electric switchcontacts with crocus cloth. Adjust higher cut in pressure on this switch.

new pump --not big enough for the job
old pump --motor windings problem, faulty start run capacitor
I suspect that as the motor is 1/2 hp if will run good when there is a need for water but under pressure the pressure switch is set to high so the motor overloads and gets hot

sounds like you still might have a leak. but in the short term bleed off 5 pounds of air from your bladder tank and the pump will turn off quicker. Your pressure switch my has a weaken a bit from age which would effect it turning on and off

check air in your water tank should be less than you're cut in pressure..

What you need to have a better pressure is the pressure tank plus a water pump.
The size of the pressure tank and pump is depend upon your budget. The bigger size and horse power of pump is much better but quite expensive.

I've advise you to visit your local home depot to look for a better brand of pump and tank and they will assist you regarding on your concern.

Is the little pipe that connects to the pressure switch clear?

I suggest you remove it and blow through it to make sure it is clear. If the pressure is getting to the switch, it has to shut off ... your switch should be set around 30/50 (on at 30 - off at 50)

What's the problem??

Inspect the jet thru the suction pipe or the removable plug if the pipe isn't inline with the center of the impeller. The jet is very small, and easy to get something stuck in there. Then prime and leave the pressure pipe closest to the outlet slightly loose to let air out. Once you get good pressure you can tighten the pipe. Sometimes you have to prime more than once to get all the air out of the well pipe.
