Sorry to hear about your problem. I do own this model too. I have not gotten the update myself. I just started using the dvd recorder.I bought a pack of dvds (Ativa) and now I need to return them, they are not supported by this dvd player. I called the 800 number and they told me some of the dvd brands it supports: JVC, TDK, Memorex, Maxell and Sony. I know Sony works, because I used them before. I also read "Vibratim" brand from Sam's Club works.

I purchased a Sylvania Sylvania DVR90VE stand alone DVD/VCR a while back and have had nothing but trouble recording on the DVDs. I have NEVER been able to effectively record on the RWs like it was advertised. I purchaed a lot of RW DVDs to find out that they wouldn't work (what a waste of money!) I did their update once (Cannot find it right now or I would try it again) and was able to successfully record on Memorex and GQ DVDs (-Rs not RWs) for awhile. The other day. It just refused to record on anything. I keep getting the disc error. If I had a little money I would consider buying a different unit. I do hate to throw away the money on this one. Even thou I have had it a while now. It is not well used.
