According to the press release of SpyCalc 2.0 (from 2010), the creator was Lucius Junevicus. He has multiple profiles out there by Googling him. However, I assume if he didn't update the app, he's not interested. Perhaps you could persuade him.

Hi, Why not use Spotlight? it's built in to the system and it's working all the time.
You don't even need to know the names of the files, you can just type something that is in a file and spotlight will find it for you - often before you have finished typing.

Because the developer wants you to upgrade to a newer version.
There may be many different reasons for that - from respectable to purely manipulative.
In the first grould would be an update which fixes some major flaws in the version you have or which is actually required by the underlying operating system which may have been updated in the meantime as well.
In the opposite end of reasoning is that the developer may want to plug in more advertising or take away something from the program to make you pay for it.
Most of the time it is OK to upgrade though, unless you're a hacker and you know you're going against the rules.
