Agree with Clive and Carl. Something is holding the line off hook, whether another handset, shorted line cord or jack, or a bad handset..

Disconnect all other phone/devices and if problem goes away, reconnect the other phones one at a time to find source of the problem.

Line in use means the line is seized or off hook, this can also be caused by a short on the phone line.

How to fix phone line problem

1. Check your connection. Make sure your phone is connected to the phone line.
2. Change phones. Plug a corded phone into the phone line where you are experiencing problems. If the problem is resolved, the problem might be your phone, not the line; if it's a portable phone, it could have a signal problem. Make sure to change phone cords along with the phone to rule out problems with a phone cord.
3.Disconnect all extra phone equipment that plugs into your phone line, including modems, fax machines and additional phones. Leave only one corded phone plugged into your phone line. If the problem still occurs, plug your phone into every phone jack in your home to verify the problem is throughout your home and not isolated to one outlet. If your problem was resolved by unplugging devices, attach each device, one by one, to see if the problem returns. If it returns when you plug in one device, you know your problem is with the device.
  • 4.Call from an outside line. You can call from a cell phone or another land-based phone line. If the problem still exists, the problem may reside in the phone lines outside your home.
  • 5.If steps 1 through 4 do not fix your phone line problem, call the phone company from an alternative phone line. Discuss the problem you are having with your phone line and all the steps you have taken to check the phone line for problems. Your phone company will probably call your phone line to run some diagnostic tests. Based on these tests, they can determine if the problem is inside or outside your home. If the problem is inside your home, you might need a professional to diagnose the problem using line-testing equipment. If the problem is in the line outside your home, the phone company is usually responsible for fixing the problem.

Phone lines are flashing making a loud beeping noise. The screen is texting funny words. Phone is ringing with ambulance style ring before the normal tone

The phone doesn't like something it's sharing a line with.

First, check to see if the extension number on each phone is different. You may have two extension 11's.

Next, check that line 1 is line 1 one all of the phones, then line 2 is line 2 etc. If one phone has line line 1 showing up on line 2 then you may have wires crossed somewhere. Or if you pick up a line on phone one and line 2 goes red on one of the other phones you have wires crossed.

Last, check in the plugs to make sure the connections are straight. Sometimes when a phone plug is inserted the pins cross and short two lines together.

Line buttons showing wrong phone lines

When a phone has only 2 lines, it's not programmed. By default, a Nortel system has 2 lines and that's all. Go into system programming and assign the number of lines and intercoms to a phone. After that, you can copy the buttons from a working phone to the new phone and you're done.

2 line phone rca 25205re1 only 1 line works not the rollover line

Most likely the problem is the cord from the wall to the phone. There are two types of cords and they look almost identical. Look closely at the connector. A single-line cord will have only two gold pin at each end. A two-line cord will have four gold pins at each end.

You need a two-line cord to get both lines from the wall to your phone. Since you have had the problem with several phones, that is the most likely cause.

    Second line not working

The phone will show that "line in use" message when it's not connected correctly.

If your two phone lines come in to one jack, make sure you are using a 4-wire line cord connected to the "line 1 and line 2" jack on the phone. You may be using a 2-wire cord so the second line isn't reaching the phone.

If the two lines are on separate jacks you need to connect line 2 to the separate "line 2" jack.

If you know for a fact that both lines are properly connected to the phone and it still doesn't see the second line, then it's time for a new phone.

2 Telephone lines and one phone jack

Most of the Cordless 2 line phone BASE UNITS have the connections on the back for line1/line2 or seperate line 1 and line 2 connection. If you have the type of phone with the line1/line2 jack you have to be sure that both lines are on the same wall jack, otherwise make sure the phone you purchase has seperate line jacks and you will have two phone cords going to the base unit.

    Defaults to Line 2

Do you have a second phone? Be sure that phone is not defaulting to line 1. With 2 lines and 2 phones, each phone defaults to one of the lines.
Unplug the phones. Plug in the phone you want to default to line 1 using the L1+L2 jack. Now plug in the second phone.
