SOURCE: 91 S-10 4WD HEATER BLOWS COLD, HEATER CORE IS NOT

1st check your radiator coolant levels this wold contribute as a loss of heat
'
2ndthe cable may have slipped and is disallowing the heat exchange from cold to hot this is under the dash and most accessible from the passengers side ...simply locate it with a light source and work the lever /switch to see if it is moving all at once the n allowing the door to open
'
3rd there should be on top of the heater under the hood passengers side where the fan resides a 3 wire plug that plugs into the heater coils remove it to see if the coils are still in tact they do burnout like a fuse ..2 screws hold it in place .

also check your fuses

also note the water pump may have malfunctioned does your temperature Gage read normal if so this would rule out the exchanging of fluid into the block from the radiator

otherwise if it does over-heat either the radiator is at a loss for fluid and should be topped off and checked for leaks..
or the thermostat is stuck and will need replacing

to check the thermostat while engine is cold remove the radiator cap then start the vehicle and watch for the fluid to circulate within the filler neck area this may take a few minutes if so then it

to check the heater core to see if it is plugged you will need to remove both hoses and with a garden hose insert the hose into either one as you watch for the water to come out of the other hose {{DO NOT USE FULL FORCE OR YOU MAY RUPTURE IT }} if it does not then you need to flush it until it comes out clearly you may see a lot of gunk this is sediment and back flushing it will work it as well they sell a product to help loosen all the material {hard-water etc } which will allow most if not all of it to free up and again wita garden hose insert it and flush the remains out of it

No heat. New thermastat, heater core flushed, good circulation. Has a rear heater.

Does blower motor work , air blowing out of ducts ?
Temperature blending is varied by the air temperature control door, which regulates the amount of air that flows through and/or around the heater core (18476) , where it is then mixed and distributed.
Movement of the control knob from COOL (Blue) to WARM (Red) causes a corresponding movement on the air temperature control door and determines the temperature that the system will maintain.
Temperature Control
The temperature control operates in the following manner:
  • Temperature control of the heater system is determined by the position of the temperature control knob (between COOL-BLUE and WARM-RED) of the heater control .
  • This control knob is connected to a potentiometer mounted in the heater control . This potentiometer is electrically connected to the electric blend door actuator that operates the A/C air temperature control door.

How to remove and replace heater gore

Welcome to Fixya

Remove the heater assembly if necessary, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core. When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing

  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement. The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.

Heater Core

  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Heater will not blow heat, heater core needed replaced twice in 3 years. I have back flushed the system and checked the thermostat, I know the dealer is going to recommend heater core again. What should I...

If the heater core is not leaking then the core is not bad. It would be filling the floorboard on the passenger side with antifreeze. If the only problem is that no heat is coming out then I would turn my attention to the temp control door. It is controlled ether by a cable or a vacuum pod. It sounds like the control for this door has failed. Try to guide them in that direction. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I am not getting any heat from my heater when turned on just cold air

Check operation of the heater core coolant control valve and associated remote control mechanism.
Chech heater coolant hoses are not kinked or crushed,
Check that both inlet and return heater hose is equally warm, as this indicates coolant flow through the heater core.
If no coolant flow:-
Check cooling system is correctly filled, taking care to bleed off any air locks from the system as necessary (with heater coolant valve open);
Check heater core is not blocked- if blocked you may be able to backflush.
