Thread machine with the presser foot UP so that your thread locates the tension slots while you pull your thread taut through the tension discs.Start at 4. Tweak it by one very short turn left or right to adjust and use scrap of fabric you plan to use. The 4423 has pattern dial setting for wovens and knits, so the tension depends on the type & weight of your fabric. Your width and length of stitches, in addition to the foot attachments will be significant for producing the results you desire. Good quality thread are a must! make sure needle is pushed all the way up in the needle bar groove, flat side in back. A poorly wound bobbin will reak havoc on top! Jimmy
