This is because the TV expects to get sound via HDMI. however, VGA doesn't have a soundoption. So there is no way to get sound over the TV natively.

do you have an HDMI output on your laptop and a loose 3.5 mm jack plugged into the laptop and TV? If not, please connect a 3.5mm jack in that fashion so it will understand to get the sound from there.

SOURCE: I have a 40in sonybravia KDL 40v4100, 1080p. No hdmi and audio w

HDMI is a video AND audio cable. It carries both at the same time. Typically with a laptop, you have to go into your audio settings and indicate HDMI audio enabled / set ON or whatever your software has. If you use a VGA connection, then you would use a separate audio hookup say from the earphone out on the laptop to the VGA's audio input port on the HDTV. Its all in the settings on the HDMI capable laptop.

on your computer, go into your vga graphics driver and hit properties, set it for dual and hit apply. close the box. then go to the graphics, options, look for dual. make sure the wire is tightly in your tv and computer. switch your tv to vga. it should be lit. then you should see your desktop on your tv screen.

Using with a laptop

Connection the monitor depends on the connections you have out of your Toshiba laptop.

The monitor has both VGA and DVI.

If the Toshiba has a VGA out, all you need is a VGA cable available online, computer or electronics store.

If the Toshiba has an HDMI out, you can connect it to the DVI on the monitor with an HDMI cable and an HDMI to DVI Adapter.

You can also use USB out with either a VGA converter or a DVI converter (go with DVI for the better picture). Converters can be found online at Amazon, you may also need a standard male to male DVI cable to use with the converter.

Connecting laptop VGA port to HDMI port on a TV
VGA to HDMI converter is required to connect a laptop to a TV with HDMI input. The VGA signal does not have an audio component. You need to connect an audio cable from the audio/headphone port on your laptop to the audio connector on your TV. There are HDMI converters with Audio input so you do not need to connect an audio cable to the TV. The audio is connected to the HDMI converter and then passes the audio with the video data to the HDMI cable to HDMI port on the TV. Check out these WEB site for these HDMI converters. http://www.aten.com/products/productItem.php?model_no=vc180 http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1174 http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/pc/Audio-VGA-to-HDMI-Video-Converter-Box-HD-HDTV1080P-p164633.htm

Can not connect hdml wire to my philips led tv with my dell laptop. what to do

If your laptop does not have a HDMI port then you need a VGA to HDMI converter. Connect this converter to your laptop and then connect it to the TV using a HDMI cable. You also need to connect the audio out port on the laptop to the audio in on the TV. You can get a combined audio input with some HDMI converters.

I need to connect a VGA dell monitor my Toshiba Laptop

HDMI is digital
VGA (the 15 pin connector) is analog.
If your connector has the digital to analog interface it should work, but likely it does not have that chip and thus will not work.

Your description of the problem tells me it may never work as you have it connected. Possibly it might be that the monitor is required to be powered on before the laptop is booted, but that only works in some cases.

I have also seen some work if a 2-step connector is used.
VGA to DVI connector, followed by DVI to HDMI connector.
DVI was the step toward digital that came before the HDMI standard was implemented and was only partially digital. DVI and VGA do not carry control signals nor audio. HDMI carries both those as well as the video.

YMMV but I think it would be cheaper and more efficient to actually purchase a monitor with a digital input (HDMI or DVI).
Without the digital/analog converter interface a digital output device (your laptop with HDMI out) can never operate an analog device (your Dell monitor with VGA input).

Dear Sir/Madam, I have an Acer Aspire 5735-642G25Mn laptop and I don't know how to connect it to my TV (Sony KDL55NX810). Could you please advise me on how to do this. Thank you. Regards, Erik

The video output on your laptop uses a VGA port, and the video in on the tv uses HDMI. You cannot plug one directly into the other, you will need to buy a special VGA to HDMI converter (NOT just a plain VGA to HDMI cable, you need a converter to change the analogue VGA signal to a digital HDMI one). Something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neet%C2%AE-Converter-Supports-Computer-Lifetime/dp/B002C6NP5C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306927936&sr=8-1
Naturally you will also need a VGA and an HDMI cable to connect everything up.

Connecting my laptop to my new TV

Hi there.
Check on the back of the TV for a VGA input port, if it has what you will need is a male to male VGA lead and a mini stereo to mini stereo audio lead to plug into the headphone port on the laptop to audio in on the TV.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!
