This seems abnormal. These machines seem to have an intermittent diagnostic that they run which includes (or simply consists of) raising and then lowering the incline or slope. If this process seems to hang or the machine never returns to "normal life", you may have to call your service number.

SOURCE: i have a nordictrack x7i

It sounds as if you may have a button stuck on your console. Thus not allowing any other buttons to be pushed.

Remove the console from the treadmill and remove the backRemove and replace the ribbon cables that run from the keypads to the control board (they are flat plastic strips that push into the board).Remove and replace all the connections on the console.

Reattach the console and calibrate by doing the following:

1. With the key off press the speed + and stop buttons at the same time and hold

2. place the key on and release the buttons

3. press the stop key once

4. press the speed up til it reaches 85

5. if your max speed is 10 mph then it should read about 9.8-10.2

If the keys will not work then the console is bad and would need replaced. Nordic track does not sell just the touchpads. Check ebay for your console it would be the cheapest. there should be a part number on the console in the inside or on the back of the plastic.

Please get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.
Thank you for contacting

Treadmill incline not working

The incline system may need to be calibrated. To initiate the calibration routine follow the steps below.

Step 1
Place the key into the machine. The key's slot is located on the bottom of the console, below the start and stop buttons.

Step 2
Press any of the incline buttons and then remove the key from the machine while the incline is changing. Pause for a few seconds and then put the key back into the slot.

Step 3
Wait as the treadmill automatically shifts to the highest possible incline and then descends to the lowest level. The treadmill should now be recalibrated.

I have a proform xp 580. when I turn it on,

Press the Stop and the Speed Up keys down while inserting the safety key.
Press the Stop key one time. The Time window should read EP:2P. Some newer models may also say FP, Pass, or the like. This means that it passes the EPROM test.
Press either incline key and the incline will calibrate automatically.
After completing calibration of incline, press the Stop key and then remove the safety key.

Nordictrack apex4100i level incline will not work

Try this calibration procedure.
Turn the power switch on. Remove the safety key. Hold the Stop and Speed Up or Speed Plus buttons down then insert the safety key.
The display should show some numbers.
Press the stop key one time and the display should show some other numbers and some 00's. Press the Incline Up button and see if the Incline begins to move, if it does let it go all the way up and then all the way down, wait a few seconds after it stops, then hit the stop key 4 times. It should be calibrated. If it didn't move then the board or the incline motor is bad.

My name is Mike; I am a service technician for ICON Health & Fitness, the manufacture of the machine mentioned. While my comments on your problem are geared generally to assist, you are welcome to call our customer service line at 18009993756 for specific instructions if needed.
The first thing to do with any incline problems with a treadmill is run “calibration.” Calibration restores all settings (including the incline sensor in this case) to the factory specs. Instructions to run calibration on your individual machine are taped on the underside of the motor hood. See your manual for removal of the hood. While each machine has specific calibration instructions most new models made by ICON will have similar steps to doing it.
To calibrate the incline you will need to press and hold the Stop and Speed + buttons while inserting the safety key or magnet. Then let go of the buttons. This will enter calibration level 1 which lists some machine information and a console memory test. Press the Stop button 1 time. This will enter level 2 of calibration. To calibrate the incline you can press either incline buttons (either the up or down arrows) and your incline should go all the way up and then all the way down. If this works then take the safety key or magnet out; turn the power off, and unplug it for several minutes. (On a side not you will want to turn the power off and unplug your machine whenever you’re not using it.)
If this does not fix the problem then it can be more complicated depending on the model and motor involved. It can range from the console not sending a signal to a loose wire or jammed motor. If this didn’t fix the problem then I would recommend calling in for further assistance.
