My computer (none stated) was on a black screen with the message disk read error press ctrl alt delete to restart. Is this just a corrupt SSD ?

Restarting did not work, and I noticed that my SSD (OCZ Trion 100 Series 480GB) was no longer listed as a boot option in my bios. (a very bad sign) I then loaded up PartedMagic and it could not detect the SSD. On PartedMagic, it just said unknown device under disk health and would not give any other information. I decided to reinstall windows on an old HDD to I could still use my computer. (using same sata port?) I had no issues doing this, until I decided to try and connect the original SSD next to the installed HDD. The bios would still not detect the old SSD and I made sure that the HDD was the only boot option - however, windows would not load. When booting, it would stay on the Asus press alt or delete to enter the bios screen for a suspiciously long time, and then got stuck in the windows boot screen. When I unplug the computer and removed the old SSD to try and boot with just the HDD again, it would load into windows quickly with no problems. Is it possible that I downloaded some sort of virus onto the SSD?

Hi Ashley Portman, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
what does my computer mean? ASUS ROG OR PRIME OR???????????????????/
first off you did not get a virus making SSD
hardware dead, (sure data or OS EASY)
    but not Hardware.
A virus can not get to the SSD secret low level pages, if was true, endless dead SSD)
the Bios shows it's dead so in that case (and doomed if cables are ok, and sata port not dead)
never expect higher levels to see the disk
    windnows. (if BIOS fails) nor
    partition tools no.
    diskmanager windows, no.
even classic, crystalinfodisk (free) tests will show the drive dead.
if you booted to a linux demo usb stick the SSD missing.
    that is because it is.
my guess was hotwapped and blown up.(easy)

BIOS is the most lowest level of testing
if the BIOS PCI scans show this SSD missing on 2 modern PCs he SSD is blown out.

the maker of the disk may have special boot disk tools that can go deeper, did you ask them>OCZ ?

I think you need to check your data and power connections. If that is ok you probably have a failed sst drive.

OCZ Trion 100 Series 480GB"
wow a ssd told.now. no PCs stated but is par here, sad.
well this is prime grade media
what is the acid test for any SSD ,... read.
ACID101:,
it fails on 2 PC. bad drive. but..how matters.
any PC or at least 2 fail in BIOS the SSD is not seen in BIOS means its dead(means bios scans see it dead)

did you hot swap drives, never do that or blow them to H3LL.

I ALSO own a $5 HDD/SSD USB CHASSIS.
i INSERT MY DRIVE UNDER TEST IN that.
then I
PLUG IN THE USB AND FIND IT IN WINDOWS 10 DISKMANAGER.
IF NOT? IT iS DEAD. ( i test the adaptor here with known good old HHD, and it works)
we always cross check things, or look silly.

I Have SEE MANY PARTS BLOWn to hell by folks hot swapping parts (it's ok in my full blown HP server) but not here (SAS arrays)
never ever plug or unplug parts inside any PC (home).
for sure those red/yellow/.black cables. ever.
ok"???

on all PCs remove the ac line cord. first.
on laptops that big battery next (not RTC coin)out
then push power botton front, (main) see fans spin down, see that, learn that see that and go gee I just saved blowing up parts.
this effect is caps discharging,
the line cord pulled kills standby power.
even the video guy below is clueless, how sad.
wiki covers this topic,if you like to learn.

http://www.pcdied.com/intel-magic/m.2/update-mobo.html#hotswap

the SATA data cable can hot swap
estat too, if all 3 things support it.ask
the power cable must not be hot swapped,OK

when you hot swap the chips in the thing swapped
like to latch up(wiki, silicon IC latchup)
when this happens they burn to a crisp.
do not hot swap thing ever.
learn to not do that, and go broke fast.

last is if the SSD does show up in bios or as USB drive external
the run killdisk on it and erase it for repurposing it.
good luck.!

    and
    Correlation does not prove causation
    learn it.
    learn test and diagnose.
    ask. (it's not hard)

one more trick of the trade ,made hard due to lack of what PC this is...sad now.
    so Ill do a desktop
    pull the line cord.
pull the SSD power and data cable
push the power button, for 30seconds and release. 10s or less most times works
see fans spin and die, bingo power is at 0volts. \
is coin cell at 2.9 to 3.3vdc, if less it is bad. and must be replaced now, OK?
    now put all that back
does SSD show up in bios,
    yes /no
    yes,good
    no? bad SSD

The SSD is OCZ Trion 100 480GB from NewEgg. Almost 3 years old.

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2019

no pc STATED OR OS, WHY DO THAT?
ok , ocz , is good drive, not old
    AND IS NOT JUNK !!!!
so here is what A bad SSD does.

1;FAILS TO SHOW UP IN BIOS ON 2 PC'S OR MORE.
2:SAME IN A SSD EXTERNAL CASE USB.
Shows up dead in diskmanager. /?
3;FAILS SMART TESTS, booted from say linux demo media.
the reason 2 PCs is simple
some have bad RTC CMOS BATTERY AND CAN NOT SCAN DRIVERS RELIABLY. SEE.?

THE 2ND PC IS THE BEST 2ND OPINION.

    LAST SOME BIOS have
the ability to disable SATA ports.
    dont allow that.
    ever see this.
    bios hdd test?
    OR THIS?http://www.pcdied.com/BIOS/bootorder1.jp...

HERE IS BIOS PCI SCANNING DRIVES (HDD/SSD)
IF THE DRIVE is missing that means the
drive is dead, and can not even tell the PC
    IT'S IDENTITY.
PCI SCANS FIND DRIVES, AND LISTS THEM ALL
    NO PC STATED AT ALL
BUT IF THE 2 SSD CABLES ARE BAD THE DRIVE WILL NOT WORK OR FAIL TO IDENTIFY.
SO..... NO PC STATED AT ALL.

ON MY HP LAP TOP TO USE THE dvd bay
for 2nd sdd (as i type) I had to enable that feature in my bios.
    port 1 is boot sdd
port 2, is now 2nd bay drive.
so testing one must know all this.
    again no PC stated.

what matters in OP first is this
I noticed that my SSD was no longer listed as a boot option in my bios.
,that means the ssd is dead

    is this a desktop PC
the only clue is 2 drives at one time.
and most folks but me do that on laptops.
    is it desktop
is the Rtc COIN CELL BATTERY 2.9VDC OR LOWER
OR OVER 7 YEARS OLD (CELL MAKERS RULES)

on any PC the RTC is first to check if things act odd.
    ok
still no PC stated out of 10,000 models
    1995 to 2018 made, vast possible.s
    my desktop is ausu,z270 prime.
love it and my battery is not dead. or weak.
    it finds any ssd made
and run now, two, m.2 fast disks
i also run m.2 to PCI-e adapters in other PCs.
bios seens them all ,battery not dead.

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2019

    and last (or first)
Do not hot swap that SDD or you will blow it up to H3LL.
i can on my nice servers here,
but not in some cheap PC
    install any destkop ssd
remove the power cable from the AC wall jack
    then push power, button
see fans spin for 1 second or so
this dischages all caps in the PC.
on laptop all batteries and AC pack
must be pulled, but not the RTC tiny coin cell.'
ok and then push button to discharge the caps inside, then play ssd swap games.

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2019

to hot swap drives one needs
    hdd/ssd certified as such
    mobo certified
    and bios cert.
then the OS must support it.

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Jan 17, 2019

    like pulling teeth here,
and normal, like me on cell phone cant type.
    well
    no PC stated
    no OS stated
    SDD finally stated, yes teeth.
we cant see you and you PC no all the wrong things you did. OK
it is computer, and is complex,ok?
tell more get more, that is how this works
    good day.

the whole 1st post can be reduced to.
    my SSD died.why?
or how to test the SDD and prove it really is dead.
    just that.
    and I answered THAT.

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Jan 17, 2019

    dead in bios elaborations.
BIOS is complex endless versions,,,and updates
but we test the ssd in sata 1,2,3,4 ports
    my desktop has 6 (z270)
we make sure no sata ports are turned off in bios. we look first.
we make sure the boot order is not with deleted items. (turn them all on, ok?)

we even have a dvd/br-d drive on port 2.
if that scans ok then move the bad sdd TO THE SATA PORT 2, SEE IF BIOS FINDS THIS ssD THERE.
AFTER ALL IT SCANNED THE DVD OK
    BUT NO PC STATED,
    AT ALL.
SOME LAME pc ONLY CAN BOOT FROM SATA PORT 1
    LAPTOP TOY GRADE.
laptops as a class, the cheap ones are pain.
the good ones have a powerful BIOS.
I and boot to 8 things on my HP.

NO PC STATED HOW COULD ANY ONE GUESS WHAT BIOS YOU HAVE.
it is and ASUS PC from 1995 to 2019
is this old pc using sata PCI card? oops.
    must i guess?

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Jan 18, 2019

a desktop, has lots of sata ports to use for testing
most laptops have 2 or worse only 1.
so laptops make for lousy testing platforms'
or more work, so that is why I begged, for PC model.
on a laptop i can also do this,(if forced)
boot from linux,CD/dvd or from usb stick demo linux. (ubuntu v16up)ask
the put my drive under test in my usb to sata
adaptor box. then see if the ssd is ok.

    tedious but laptops are THAT>

You got a virus onto the SSD do not use again and for safety myself I would clean all out keep what files you need first then do a factory resit as it may still have some parts of a virus inside best be safe than sorry, had same myself long time ago, take care good luck.

    even free killdisk will
    your post is FUD.
    all drives can be erased.
ask the maker of the drive for there eraser
they have one,and for sure works.
my guess is OP hot swapped the drive.
and blew it up. noobs do that. brave they are.

there is no prove on record
any correctly erased hdd, or ssd
    magically reinfected it self.
    zero proof

SOURCE: Notebook will not boot

If I understand what your problem is...
I had the same problem, it was a caused by bad Windows XP install CD.
Call Gateway and explain the situation, you may need to have a magnifying glass handy to read the tiny engraved lettering in the center of the CD disk.
Have your 'Product Key' available.
If you have some kind of sales receipt, or other "Proof of Purchase" have it handy too.
You will need to tell them, you do not have the program installed on other computers.
They can send you another disk.
This method will only work if you have a legal copy of the program.

SOURCE: problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.

The cd window indicate err. why

A disk read error is very common; it usually occurs as soon as your computer boots up from SSD, HDD or another hard drive and has affected a large number of users of Windows 10/8/7/XP.
This error has the message "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" on the screen like the picture below:
This message indicates that your hard drive has a problem when the operating system attempts to read the disk. That is, the disk is preventing the computer from entering into its operating systems.
Simply put, a disk error could be caused by several reasons such as incorrect boot order, BIOS issue, IDE cables failure, incorrect MBR configuration, faulty hard drive, etc.
When meeting such an issue, no matter how many times you restart your computer by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del" keys, this error still exists.
In the presence of this issue, it will still exist regardless of how many times you restart your computer by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del". In fact, a disk read error is not a problem that can be solved by a simple restart. But don't worry, this post will tell you top seven useful solutions to a disk read error occurred SSD.
How to Fix Disk Read Error Windows XP/7/8/10

Solution 1: Boot OS from Hard Drive

If a disk error occurred, the first thing to do is to check whether the boot order is correct in BIOS.
There are different ways to get into BIOS in different computer models and operating systems. When turning on the computer, the first boot screen will usually show you what key to press to go into the BIOS.
You can refer to this guidance How to Enter The BIOS On Your Computer. Once you are in BIOS, find the boot order section. In the boot order section, check to make sure the correct hard drive is placed as the first boot priority before any others in the listing.
Changing this setting might be enough to help your computer boot normally. If it is still unbootable, try the next solution to fix disk error occurred.

Solution 2: Reset or Upgrade BIOS

Resetting your computer BIOS to default or upgrading to the latest version might be able to solve "A disk read error occurred" in Windows XP/7/8/10.
Here is the step-by-step guide to reset BIOS:
  1. Press a specific key (F2, F8, F12, Esc or Del) according to your computer model and OS to enter into BIOS.
  2. Find the option to reset BIOS to default.
Tip: The option name is different depending on different computer manufacturers and BIOS versions, which can be "Load BIOS Defaults", "Load Default Settings", "Load Fail-Safe Defaults", "Load Setup Default" or "Get Default Values". Choose one according to the real case, then save this change.
If the disk read error on boot up persists, try the following solution.

Solution 3: Repair Master Boot Record and Boot Sector

A corrupted or damaged Master Boot Record or boot sector could cause disk errors. Therefore, repairing the MBR or boot sector might be able to fix the issue"A disk read error occurred" with USB boot.
You can use a professional and reliable partition and disk management tool - MiniTool Partition Wizard - to repair your MBR in Windows XP/7/8/10.
As a dedicated partition manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard could be used for many operations such as resize/move/extend/copy/wipe partition, rebuild MBR, migrate OS to SSD/HD, copy disk, recover lost partition, perform data recovery, and so on.
Here we strongly recommend MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional Ultimate Edition. This edition has a feature called "Bootable Media" based on Win-PE; it is designed to manage disks and partitions when the operating system fails to boot or when there is no operating system.

Disk read error occured

If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

1- You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

2 - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

3- or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!!

A disk read error occurred, press ctrl-alt-+delete to restart

Hello Sir

I am afraid that the hard drive is corrupt. It needs to be reformatted and reinstalled. There is also a good possibility that the hard drive will need to be replaced I am afraid. To make sure ask the technician or who will attend to it to disconnect the hard drive from your laptop. Plug it in an enclosure and copy all of its contents before reformatting. IF IT DOES WORK then don't let them trick you that it needs to be changed as it is just a case of corrupt files and a reformat / reinstall will do it good. In this manner you hit 2 birds with one stone and you get things back up and running :)

Hope that this solution helped you :)

Best Regards
Alx :)
