the fault should be in side the cam, start test from the charger connecting socket, measure the power in the mother board, if any of the fusible resistor or the regulator SMD found faulty, must replace.

A self portrait from a camcorder? Just set it on a tripod, get yourself situated and let it run for a few minutes or less.
Then run it though a free program as simple as Picasa. If you don't have it a simple search is all you need to do.
Use the Stop button to freeze frame then use the upper left command 'File' to 'save a copy' and it saves any frame you want. I do this all the time with fast moving subjects (kids, critters, jets etc.) then find the perfect shot in a frame.

Hi,

Sony is pretty secretive about the :23 code. It can't be found anywhere. However, to service the C:31 code, Sony recommends you do the following:

1. Turn off the camcorder.
   
2. Remove the battery or disconnect the AC power adapter for 60 seconds.
   
3. Insert the battery or reconnect the AC adapter.
   
4. Turn on the camcorder.
   
5. If the error message appears, service may be required.
   

OR

This may seem silly, but it worked for me. I found this on another discussion forum. Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times. Surprisingly it worked for me

This is not grain as such, it is electronic 'noise', generated when taking photos in low-light situations. Unavoidable, I'm afraid.

Don't have an answer, but two of our Sony HVR-A1U have now lost touch screen function. I wonder if this is a common problem?
