brute force on the glass shelf.... it was just stuck in place by the cold sticky liquid that had seeped under the edges and bonded the glass and plastic together

Your defrost drain is clogged and now the defrost drain trough has filled with ice causing the water from your defrost cycles to flow into the fresh food section. You will need to clear all ice form thr drain area and this is done thru the freezer wall and some models also have a removable bottom panel in the freezer that has to come out also to get to the drain. You can do this it will just take a little time. About an hour for a first timer with little experience. Good luck and hope this helps

Typicaly it is found on a sticker on the back! In your case I suggest taking the broken shelf to a local appliance dealer and they will be able to match it with a replacment for you.
