I've tried holding the fast forward button, but once the disk gets to the end of the chapter on the DVD it doesn't advance to the next chapter (i.e., chapter 2), but goes back to the beginning of chapter 1.

Okay...upon further inspection, my left spring has broken in two. Going to call around for some quotes to replace the spring. Thanks for the suggestions.
SOURCE: Any button pushed on my remote control causes ''SET 1'' on display.
Hi, All you need to do is point the remote at your DVD player and hold both the number "1" and "enter" keys down for about 10 seconds. Evidently that re-sets the remote. It worked for me so good luck.

The remote is required for most operations. You can get one on Ebay--or clean your family room/house and find the one you lost.
Hello, I had the same problem and after spending a few hours reading and trying things, I found a solution. Its very simple. Power on your unit (manually) and then on your remote control push and hold at the same time"enter" and the number "1" while pointing directly to your unit and this should solve the problem. Good luck.
