That usually means the machine is not being cooled. Since it is air cooled, check the fan. As soon as you press auto you should hear and feel the big fan come on and start exhausting air from the bottom of the machine.

You have to add salt to the ice you are using to cool the machine. This will make it colder and make the ice cream harder.
