TIME MACHINE DOESNOT SEE SEAGATE DRIVE - Seagate Computers & Internet

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. Uninstall the Seagate software from your PC and format the disk.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

i heard the external hard drives by seagate have issues

it seems its not formatted - if you have Windows, try this:
Start > control panel. Then Go to Administration Tools (or somethine like that, dont have windows in english) and find Computer Management icon. Run it. Now explore to Disc management - there you will see your USB HDD. Click on them with right mouse button and create new partition, etc..

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.

Turned out to be an easy one!! The Seagate tech had me reinstall the drive manager, and it then worked. But he did recommend using Time Machine, which I have, over their software!
