Simple test to find out if the problem is internal or external: put a black tape over the IR/remote sensor and see what happens. If the tv still turns on by itself then it's internal and it caused by an aged and unstable power source: the voltage on the 5 volts Stand-by section varies so great that it triggers the start relay - usually caused by aged filtering capacitors.
This is not good, the source can fail at any minute with bad consequences for the rest of the tv. Have the tv inspected and the aged components identified and replaced now, before they fail and fry something else.

are you using a cable box? tried to reset first. if still the same problem, at this time you will need to remove the back cover to access the internal part. then look for the screen back light which need replacement.

I have a Vizio XVT473SV with no video or audio, but the Vizio standby lights up.

I would say its most likely the power supply. Quite often after a power surge this can happen. Another option could be that the surge just blew the fuse on the power supply board and replacing that may be all you need. That said, usually you will get no signs of life at all if the fuse blows.
