I have a GE Monogram that's about 13 years old. It appears to be working great, but yesterday it sounds like a woodpecker got stuck inside. Every 5 minutes line clockwork for about 3 seconds unless the door is opened, then every 3 minutes till it cools back down. Does it sound like something is going out? I'd like to fix it before it actually breaks. Any clues?

SOURCE: GE side by side not cooling properly/outside surface hot

please check the condenser fan motor. it is probably not running or the condenser is very dirty.

remove the rear cover and it will show you the compressor and the condenser fan.
if the fan is not running, try to rotate it manually and feel if it is sticking .

if it is, it may just need the old wd 40 lubricant.

tnx 4 using fixya,

My built in side by side is making a noise about every 30 minutes or so that sounds like a woodpecker pecking on it...about 10 times. It is driving me crazy! Have any idea what this might be?

I have the exact problem with my built0in side-by-side Monogram. 1 yr 3 months old, and it sounds m=like a woodpecker for 3 seconds approximately 1ce/hr. Does not appear related to ice maker. You can create the sound by changing the temp setting on the drawer at the bottom. As you command a lower temp, the sound happens a couple seconds. Actually sounds like a solenoid opening and closing at 60Hz frequency, as though a control board were feeding AC to a DC coil. Any ideas? Fortunately, this fridge has a 2 year warranty, but this should not happen to a $6K dual condenser fridge in just over a year!!
