You, should on a older (XP)-OS system update the firmware IFP-8XX.HEX (see iriver.com). The firmware transformate the player in a basic removablestation. The Iriver manager is not any longer operational (and not needed) W7 recognizes your new ermovable station and you can transfer anything you like.

IFP-790 can be accessed in UMS and Manager mode:

UMS mode
For firmware upgrades iriver PLUS3 must be used.
Download iriver PLUS3 going to this site:
http://www.iriver.com/index.asp
Click Support on the left side.
Select Download in the second column.
Select "Download iriver PLUS3" in the page: allow download (when blocked / sometimes download has to be repeated).

The size of the iriver PLUS3 download is 59.3 MB.
iriver PLUS3 can also be used for music transfers in UMS mode.


Manager mode
For Manager type connection the iriver music manager must be downloaded and installed.

Go to the support site:
http://www.iriver.com/index.asp

Select Support in the first column.
Download in the second column.
Enter the phrase 'music manager' and click GO:
download 'iriver music manager (Ver 3.21)' [ 28 MB].

GO TO START AND THEN MY COMPUTER AND MANUALLY OPEN IT, DRAG SONGS TO IT , ROB

if you know some one with the same iriver...you can copy thier software (not music) onto you pc / laptop....disconnect & plug your iriver up...now you can format your iriver..copy the software onto it...its like starting fresh now.......but if no one is around w/ an iriver..you will have just purchase another one ...(if purchase hard drive you will still need the software)...

I had the same issue. Just load Media Player 10 and Windows XP will then recognize it.

You don't actually need a program to access the iriver on your computer as long as there is a fresh battery in it, a USB connection, and using windows explorer. Iriver has the capabilities to drag and drop files into it. Just goto "my computer" (on your desktop) and look for "removable device", which will be your MP3 player.
