When the machine is plugged in, the settings should be indicated in a little window, Just keeping pressing settings until you see the word DOUGH or number 8 Press set, then start and away you go.

I just bought a new b2250 machine from Zellers for $59 dollars, they also have the b2000 for the same price. It's not worth your time to mess around trying to fix these things.

Hi,
It could be the belt is slipping or a loose gear. Take a look at the gear & belt assembly in the base of the machine. Also, make sure the sealed bearing in the bottom of the bread pan is not sticking. It should turn free by hand Hank

My breadmaker is on the dough setting and will not beep to let me know when to add ingredients to the dough

If there is no beep just look at your manuals cycle times and verify how long the 2nd knead takes. Then set another timer such as an alarm clock or oven timer etc. to alert you with a beep that coincides with 5 minutes BEFORE then end of the 2nd knead. Add your fruit, nuts etc. then.

I have a brand new black and decker bread maker - used it four times....but each time the bread is very heavy, not light. I measure ingredients excactly as your recipe calls for. What is the problem Jean...

There are many ways to adjust the weight of your bread. Try any (or all) of the following:
1) a little less salt.
2) a little more water
3) a little less flour
4) add 1 or 2 tablespoons of wheat glutten
5) use the dough setting and let bread rise in bread pans for a good long time (e.g. 1.5 or 2 hours)
6) 'better for bread' yeast - stored in the refrigerator
