On the 1998 Evinrude 15hp outboard, the air/fuel mixture is controlled by the carburetor. The carburetor is preset at the factory to provide the correct air/fuel mixture for normal operation. If you are experiencing performance issues or rough idling, it is best to take your outboard to a qualified mechanic for proper diagnosis and adjustment.
However, if you still want to adjust the air/fuel mixture yourself, here are the general steps:

  1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
  2. Locate the carburetor and remove the air filter cover.
  3. Locate the air/fuel mixture screw on the carburetor. It is typically located on the side of the carburetor and may be covered by a small metal cap.
  4. Carefully remove the cap and use a small screwdriver to adjust the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning the screw clockwise will lean the air/fuel mixture (less fuel), while turning it counterclockwise will richen the mixture (more fuel).
  5. Adjust the screw in small increments (no more than 1/8 turn at a time) and monitor the engine's performance. You may need to adjust the screw multiple times to find the optimal setting.
  6. Once you have found the optimal setting, replace the cap and air filter cover.
  7. Test the engine under normal operating conditions to ensure proper performance.
Note: Adjusting the air/fuel mixture can have a significant impact on engine performance and should be done carefully and in small increments. It is important to use the correct tools and take appropriate safety precautions when working on your outboard. If you are unsure about any aspect of the process, consult a qualified mechanic or refer to the manufacturer's manual for specific instructions.

Evinrude outboards

Johnson and Evinrude carbureted 2-stroke outboards since 1964 require a 50:1 fuel to oil mixture (2%) on engines without an automatic oiling system - 6 gallons of gas to 1 pint of outboard oil.

My mercury 35 hp outboard motor idle's fine but won't run

While at the river try to adjust the fuel air mixture. When you are on the water it puts the engine under a load and if that dont work then dont be afraid to bump up the idle stop screw slightly.
