I never use this model, but I think switching chips is probably the easiest.

SOURCE: Error message Sharp FO-4450 Fax machine

Press life "2" start for toner.

And life "3" start for drum.

These will reset the counters.

If you are having a "check drum error" then you have broken the sensor arm that is attached to your lid.

Call a technician in your area.

SOURCE: Dell 3100 CN replace drum cartridge

I found this posting on a Dell website. It maybe helpful before the chip activates.

Title: Extend drum life
Date: March 25, 2008
ProsIt prints
Consnot very long

Additional ThoughtsAfter the drum "expired" the first time I purchased a small $10 chip on a popular auction site and that brought it back to life. It then "filled up" after several more months. What is that? Well, if you occasionally would empty the excess toner that it picks up off the paper as it flows through the printer you can catch the drum before it "POPs" a small pressure sensor that would immediately stop the printing and say it is "FULL". There are two screws - one on each end of the "nose" of the drum. You will be shocked to see all that comes out.

SOURCE: Error Message Drum Life Over, Replace Drum

The "drum" referred to is the imaging drum which is replaced separately from the toner cartridge. The drum life is rated for a certain number of copies, and the printer is telling you it's time. Replacement drums are available at big-box office places and from many online sources. Just do a Google search for "kx-fl511 drum". The new drum just slides in much like the toner cartridge, so replacing it isn't difficult.
