Have you tried opening the cover, inspecting it for dust, using compressed air to clean it out? Make sure you unplug the power cord first. Dust can cause all sorts if mayhem without you realizing it.
The fan is to cool specific components by keeping air flowing over them. If cleaning the dust out doesn't fix the audio output problem, I would look at the output jack to ensure no wires were faulty. If that appears to be good, switch out the audio cable to verify the output is good/bad.
If all of that still doesn't fix the problem then you likehave an internal electrical component problem. If you cannot repair it yourself then you can try someplace like Best Buy Geek squad to see if they are able to correctly repair the problem.

Make sure you use the sleeve as ground reference on the 1/4" connector then check that aginst the ring and or tip and then you should see something on the oscilloscope. Let me know if that works. Have you tried hooking up some speakers? We can live chat if that help you any. Let me know Guru Jay

Make sure that you have the correct input signal selected.
Also, check if the sound is not muted.
If you have a multi-room speaker switch, make sure it is set correctly to main speakers.

sounds like it might be a graphics card. if u have an old graphics or vidio card, open the case and remove your card then install the old one. if it works now youll know your card is bad. If u have an old video card and an open pci slot install it and move the monitor cable to the old video card plugin. if it works now same thing your graphics card is bad. to know which card to remove just remember which one the monitor is plugged into.

Bad DSP chip. The only other possibility is if you have the "Direct" on. On the front of the receiver it's a small button. Also make sure your "Speaker Select" A/B is "on" You will see it on the display, it's also a small button on the front of the receiver. If all this is correct and you still have no audio, it's a bad DSP chip. Not worth repair, it's 400-500 repair. Not very common in a Yamaha RX-V series, but I have seen it. I'm a Yamaha Dealer. If you need further help, post a comment and I will be glad to help you further.
