Check the carbon motor brushes, there might be arcing on the armature. New brushes may help if the armature is ok.

How do I replace the fuse on a rainbow vaccum?

The D4 model Rainbow has a Thermal Cut Off
This has to be manually replaced. It is attached to the Field 120v D4
If this has blown, then most likely something is causing. The Armature Tall 120v D4 could be going bad.

Burning smell

The response by Lynnette is in reference to the power nozzle....if you are having this issue with the main unit, then it could be the armature is starting to go bad. Have your Rainbow in front of you and give us a call. We can walk you through some steps to narrow it down.

My Husband put a cleaner in the water when turning the vaccum on.

If nozzle works but the main unit does not then it leaves only few things - motor is "kaput" or some wire got loose somewhere. When motor burns it usually stinks pretty bad.
You have to open it up to see and test. We can do it for you but you'd have to ship it here.Se instructions

When it is running look on top of unit to see if there is any flashing from the brushes, if your unit has been getting pretty hot on top, it would probably be motor brushes. These are not very expenseive to replace and by doing so you will have your unit for so many more years.

Sounds like the motor is going bad and will eventually not start. I am in the process of changing the motor in mine too and they are not cheap. just search around for a motor
