Acer Aspire multi-media desktop model AM1641-U1521A is slow

PC runs now with new RTC, NVRam coin cell battery the only issues not is slow boot, VISTA. and why is PC instant boot before, (magic)

  • Tim Heard
    Tim Heard Nov 07, 2018

At the moment, my Acer Aspire model runs on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I did reset the BIOS settings to default, so that resolved the issue of this PC not displaying anything. It can still be turned on like I just did today. So the issue I'm currently experiencing is that nothing happens for like a minute before the start-up process begins. My Acer Aspire is still usable in that I can operate programs, access the Internet, play games, etc. I'm just looking for a solution to the minute-long delay that has been occurring with my Acer Aspire whenever I press the power button to turn it on. Initially, I thought replacing the motherboard battery would resolve it, on that which I was proven wrong. I also tried to use a program called Fix-It Utilities I had just tried blowing out the dust from the power supply with a can of compressed air. So far, these did not solve the problem. The fact that the Acer Aspire is up and running right now suggests that the source of the power-up delay problem lies not in the CMOS battery I replaced or the HDD like you suggested (it does show up in BIOS, by the way) but in something that actually connects the power button or power supply to the motherboard.

VISTA support ended
"Windows Vista Support Ends April 2017"
(phone calls dead, ms.com dead, some pnp drivers still there but not mush longer)

there are many issues here on just this PC.
1: is this the original HDD? or preplaced.
2: if replace what disks were used to load vista.
acer is correct answer Microsoft retail disk wrong.
I see the support page at Acer, AM1641 is gone
USA support, but not A1641 and vista /w7 driver are there, at acer.com
I cant see the PC boot and watch the screens,
but Id bet its just cold booting and if is.
sure it slow. all are. with HDD buy a SSD try that?
as I stated and as we now learn your drives are bad. and with bad drivers, sleep does not work.
more specially RESUME (instant run) fails.
if you are seeing cold boots, and never seen a hDD boot before (from first hDD activity led flashing)
then know that all HDD are slow, 30 seconds is par.
and VISTA is not W10 fast boot new feature.
or does you PC have nice vastly faster SSD.

It is possible in most cases to fix each bad driver seen in device manager, with vista.
we can find them 1 by one,
use HWinfo32.exe (free) portable
and get the ID codes, and we can find the driver
for each chip,
there seems to be 9 special drivers need.
the real recovery disk had that.... back then...

Testimonial: "I'm well aware that Microsoft's support for Vista ended last year. I currently have a more modern Dell Inspiron PC that runs on Windows 7 which I bought over 4 years ago in order to use some modern programs while studying game development and design at college. After leaving the old PC idle for a couple of years, I decided to repurpose it as a secondary computer used for basic Internet activities, run old games, and test my own games to see how they would run on a low-end spec PC with a different OS. Now that official support of Vista ended, I recently started to consider upgrading the OS on my Acer Aspire to Windows 7. So replacing Vista should be no major loss once I get around to doing that. The device manager on my Acer Aspire detected a few errors: one of the network adapters, a Coprocessor, and an SM Bus Controller. I'm not sure if they are part of the problem, though. And now I'm interested in this website you mentioned."

All things have an end and vista ended.
10 years is the design life of OS.
it's time to move on, for sure.

for those thinking it is money grab.
    you are wrong, !
why , well that is easy.
vista and worse XP are weak
they were not design to live and survive in the 2018 world if very dangerous websites and emails packed full of virus.

it's like folks in 1950 didn't lock their front doors
those days are gone! times change.
the web today is far far more dangerous than say 2007. an for sure 2001 XP birth date,
its brave new world, pay attention to security, or bad things can happen.
(do not store banking passwords in any PC)
    ok?! (in head only)

lets not do power button 101
you push that button guess what it is not power , like in the old day of 1950 radios
with power switch, at all .
yes it is a digital switch and is simple
but is not simple is how power management works. not at all
what happens is , your PC if laptop (more complex of all in the 1 regard)
the PC never really ever tuners off ever
(sure if up to 3 batteries pulled and line cord yes)
but there is chip on your mobo (even an ARM $1 processor), that has power 24/365 full time (it is called power controller chip)

and it is wired to that switch, marked power.
you push that switch and that so called power controller, ARM chip runs code inside that (firmware) that does the startup.
guess what it can do cold boot and resume and in hibernate modes.)
3 different ways to turn on as folks see things.
so it if the cold boot is the current state.
then the Arm chip , power all chips up first
then resets the CPU and the CPU then jumps to the first instruction in bios
that is how it works, the bios also controls the fan, if the fan is dead the BIOS many be delayed or stall or fail.
The BIOS is hard coded to not run with dead fan and if CPU is hot , it will balk.
the Bios is not 3 instructions it's 100,000 long ok.?

I will not try to type here how it RESUMES< if curious. we can show you a book that covers that topic, now to prove this is real I'll will show the
    schematic, of the arm here.

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Nov 10, 2018

DOES THE SAME THING HAPPEN , delayed cold boot if you boot to CD or boot to USB stick?
even remove HDD see if delay happen then?
I post this facts above so you learn how PCs work and to solve WHAT is slow, buy using diagnosis methods.
run it with battery out big first. on AC
then make sure fan works, battery out.(kept out)
then make sure HDD is being delayed next.
the HDD lamp glows, and blinks when accessed, and is big clue here.
if it takes 1 full minute for the hDD to access 1st time, then BIOS has found errors.

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Nov 10, 2018

this chip called ENE IS the power controller
if your fan is dead/weak, the ene chip will be upset. it can delay or halt booting,
that is why the fan is checked first
an the battery big is removed first
so you do NOT overload the charge chip see up top, ok>?
if you overload the charge chip, the PC wants to not turn on for 2 reasons.
the overload reason (should be obvious that)
and not allowing huge currents to flow into said shorted old battery and then catching fire. as vast batteries old did, google recalls endless.
remove the silly big battery and if old get it away from wood, and your home.

  • Anonymous Nov 10, 2018

if only the HDD is slow?
that is a whole other topic
sure it's slow, all are, really.(in less raid array you can't have)
that is why most folks upgraded to SSD long long ago. for that 1 fact. (and longer life)

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Nov 11, 2018

the PC when new has 3 Vista recovery modes.
the recovery partition mode, and the 2 disks from from Acer,
    disk1 acers version of vista
disk2, acers driver and app disk for only this PC.
the 3 method covered in the manual is the
make your own recover disk sets.

the 4 way would buying the microsoft retail vista Disk and after using it find out that
many chip driver are missing even with PNP and iternet working
so after all these years, if the PC was updated
even with new HDD or SSD.
the drivers are now bunged. like yours are.
so we then go to acer.com get the drivers and load the by hand.,

this is how all PCs work with some exceptions.
The so now we know what sleep is dead.
that is really the post, title is sleep is dead. not slow. all PCs boot slow. COLD

if you installed the missing drivers by hand the PC may now sleep, and resume as it did long ago. (for sure if using the original disks)

What future VISTA has I've no clue.
MS owns and runs their PNP servers.
It is there CALL how long they let the old VISTA driver linger there, (I called them and asked and the answer was (do not count on those to linger longer... VISTA IS DEAD)
one can look here and find drive, lingering.
    http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/...

The problem with BIOS is there is no documents on it, (spare)
some bios allow verbose booting, we turn that on first thing if there. so you can watch what it does. (to see if BIOS is slow or is your HDD slow to wake up or if vista is cold booting from the old HDD that are all slow)
the question only remains what is slow.
my guess is you lost your drivers and the OS was switched to cold booting only

    now your drivers are here.

Are you in the USA , this Acer post
    https://community.acer.com/en/discussion...

shows this PC not sold here and no driver support in USA> (we are USA fixya)
if in UK the UK site is here.
iv;e no idea what "A" means in Am1641
    https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/su...

I SEE 9 DRIVER THERE FOR W7, TOO.
I SEE THIS PC SOME CAMe with blank DVD-r disk
and day1 you make your own recovery disks
doing so later with a virus , this fails.

finding driver for any PC lacking support is not easy, we can do it chip by chip yes
using HWinfo32.exe (free portable) google tht
it will tell you the device IDs

    example of 1 ID.
    DeviceInstanceId PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_86771043&REV_15\4&188A02D0&0&00E7

and last user the serial number at acer support
I can not so i you do , it might magically
find the AM1641 and not the vastly more common
    A1641
the A might mean only the advanced multimedia options.
    good luck finding drivers

  • Larry Ng
    Larry Ng Nov 11, 2018

"network adapters, a Coprocessor, and an SM Bus Controller"
sure they are part of the problem.
the PC sleep modes need drivers for all chips in the PC to sleep , and resume.
all ACER drives must be loaded and working
then and only then can sleep/resume work
you PC is only sleep busted.
the PC runs ok, but will not sleep.

    your PC is ok,
your PC cold boots ok as fast as any hDD can.
your PC sleep mode is broken , only that.
    I bet.

SMbus is key to making all this work
it allows the OS to scan the chips on 2 wire bus, like i2C does.
sleep modes are complex, as are "wake on" features, to end sleep.
fix your drivers, first, all of them
and I beet sleep/resume works (your instant boot)

    OLD PCs 101 (10 years +) yours is 11.
learn now that w10 does not run on most old PCs (less than 10 sure)
W7 is far better, only because it is old,too
learn that the many (vast) old PCs many of the chips inside ended that day, at Vista
or at XP. a hard cold fact and no drivers on earth ever for them. (I have the list)

but if highly motivated, one can
run HWinfo32.exe and see all device ID's
that are dead (device manager can to but is only tedious)
see do each chip one by one,
we get the VEN= code and DEV code
and we decode those to ream mfg name and real chip names.
then we attempt to get the driver from the maker,
intel has some, (or not) Intel dropped support on old HD graphics,
some makers of chips died, gone.
some dropped support on all early chips.
even intel drops support on all new intel processors, and only does w10 now.
EACH chip dead (or weak) has its own story
so we look them up and do the hard work
    if motivated,
too bad acer has no true support page.
after 10 years, many makers end that.
so is best to download all drivers on all PCs before 1 decade ends.
I have joke for those chips,
Elvis left the building. (wiki has list of dead makers, the list is like 10x longer that the SERVIORS)
I do think the MS.com PnP server will do your PC, if you have w7 real MS install disk
laying about and even a spare HDD
load w7 for free, and run it.
see if PNP works with Ethernet wired,
    cost zero.
you can also DL w10 for free, and Ms.com
    run it for 30days free.
use a spare hdd, (saving the vista)
and see if w10-32 runs, and boots and if the PnP engine (Ethernet cable wired)
works, takes no time at all
    after the silly questions, phase.
then watch TV or walk dog come home
omg w10 loaded, wow and only 1 chip dead.
wifi chips are common dead, if you have one in that desktop.
use Ethernet only. for all OS loads.
even stay there like me now.

all ways to sniff chips is here
    http://www.pcdied.com/pci-101.html#easy_...

too bad acer deleted pages. at 10yr mark.
    sad.

Run command "prefetch" in "run" menu and delete all unnecessary files. It will release RAM and definitely fasten the computer.

In very rare cases, the battery pack of your PC may stop accepting a charge, i.e., the battery stops working and no longer supplies power to the computer. To minimize the risk of ever experiencing this problem, we strongly recommend that you download and install the latest BIOS by clicking the 'Downloads' link that will appear when you are finished reading Support News.
You can get there by clicking this link:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=1209135&rpn=PSAA0U&modelFilter=A105-S361&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768663
I recommend that you Install ALL CURRENT UPDATES. Be sure and choose the correct Operating System from the dropdown menu. Do Window Updates following Toshiba. That should correct your issues. Also, PLEASE don't forget to Rate My Solution, OK? Thank You :)

here is the list of top fails, and cures.
1: remove the big battery and test PC, run ok now, on AC only.
it must even forever.
2: replace the RTC coin cell battery at 7year max old. (its time)
3 ;the HDD is bad. we run HDD tests on it now., in this order

learn that if the RTC bat. goes dead the NVram forgets
and with NVram forgets the BIOS can find the perfect HDD.
that is why ORDER matters. for that reason.

if after replacing any RTC bat. we go in to BIOS and reset BIOS to defaults inside BIOS, then make sure boot order inside BIOS
shows, HDD 0 first. and is not missing, if missing HDD may be dead. HDD can fail in 5 years on cheap laptops. and for sure bumped or dropped.
