1976 ge refrigerator/freezer will not freeze foods

It seems to be running all the time.

No don't have it repaired. One thing you need to check is the fan in freezer compartment. It's usually right behind a vent somewhere in the freezer. When you hear motor running feel if you feel air blowing in that freezer. If no, access that fan and try tapping the blade with a piece of wood. NO METAL! May get it started again that way but it won't last. The fan can be found in a sidewalk junker and replaced free. That's as far as I'd go on a fridge that age. You can also contact the power company in your area. I know where I live they'd exchange that fridge for a new one free of charge. A energy rebate program. A repair guy will charge you a fortune if he will even touch it at all. Don't think the freon in a fridge that old is legal anymore. You get a crooked repair guy over there and he'll try charging you to convert it to the right freon and every other crooked thing he can rob you on. The fan, if it isn't that it's over.

Well for 42 years its done good. it's more than likely the gas needs replacing if the motor is still working, surprising to see one still going this long.

Thank you! By gas, do you mean Freon? Should I have it fixed? I think that it’s still running because it’s never been moved.

the old one work off a different type of freon gas but would think it could be worth, 20 to 30 years is the most some last. but its like any gas it turns to a dust over time so would need a freon flush to clean the pipes out.

Check the compressor.
Unplug for 15-20 min. plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will have to be behind the ref to listen and make sure you hear the compressor start and not just a fan running. If you hear a clicking noise then the compressor relay is bad.

SOURCE: Side by side GE refrigerator freezing food in refrigerator.

The unit is having a damper control issue. In the back of the refrigerator there is an assembly that is in the center at the top. It connects to the freezer side. The damper is broken, cracked or has an obstruction. Check this and see if it is the problem.

My GE Artica fridge seems to be freezing then defrosting then freezing again. All of the carboard boxed food is caked with ice and the boxes deterioriate and I have tried resetting the freezer temp s

Those refrigerators have a lot of issues so if you can return it I would. But you can check to see if the freezer fan and fan by the compressor are working. They should be running whenever the compressor is running. If they are you'll need a technician to check out the rest.

Yes the refrigerator knob is just a damper between the freezer and the refrigerator. All the heat removal is done in the freezer section. it just dumps air through to the refrigerator. So drop the thermostat down to about 5 and try that. If food is still freezing
drop the thermostat a little more. If food continues to freeze then your thermostat could be bad. Not sensing temp properly and allowing the refrigeration system to run to long.
Hope this helps
