My riccar 8955. If I lift it off the floor while it is running it shuts off. What's up?

Your 8955 could be as old as 18 yrs. Try tightening the screw holding the handle in, it could be loose allowing the handle to move back and forth enough to keep the switch from activating.
If it's an older vacuum or is used heavily it could have cracks in the body where the handle screw attaches or some damage inside the vacuum body where the handle bottom goes into.
If that doesn't help, Remove the bag door, remove the screws at the top to remove the cover to gain access to the area where the switch and wiring is located to inspect for the cause. When you push the lever at the top of the handle a lever going down activates the switch. It doesn't take much play in the handle to make the switch go on and off.

The switch will not turn the vaccum off or on

The switch is activated by the lever you push in the handle. Start by tightening the screw holding the handle in. If that doesn't solve it remove the bag door and the screws holding the cover above the bag to gain access to the switch compartment. If you can't figure it out in there take it to your Riccar dealer

Faulty switch

Your 8650 is an old vacuum. The switch is in the part of the vacuum where the handle goes down into. When you push the lever on the handle it activates the switch. To get to the switch take off the dust cover, remove the three Screws on the small cover where the handle goes in to see the switch. On older Riccar vacuums like yours sometimes the screw holding the handle in is loose which can cause the switch to not Always engage properly. To test this turn the vacuum on and wiggle the handle. If the vacuum vacuum cuts out you may only need to tighten the handle screw.
