The plate is not screwed in, it is held tight by a couple of metal springs on each side. Just take a small regular screw driver and gently pry up the face plate. You may have the presser foot lowered by the switch on the right side of the bobbin/shuttle area slide it so the presser feet raise.

turn the machine to "on". Tip the machine on its back and you will see a little door on the left-hand side. Open the door from left to right and inside are two AA batteries. Change the batteries (both batteries go in with the at the top). Close the door, upright the machine, turn it off and turn it on again. The display will be 0 0 2.5. It's now ready to go.

2.the motor,,here's how to tell about the motor,, smell the motor & see if it has a smell to it,,if the motor has a smell like old dirty socks or a burn smell then chances are the motor has gone out
