Is evaporator fan in freezer running? Is there any frost build up on inside back freezer wall?

  • Alan Jones Oct 31, 2018

The defroster heater was not working so ice built up and stopped the air flow. New heater fixed the problem. Thanks.

Greetings bkbkbt,

Many times this behavior is an early indicator that your unit either needs freon or might have a compressor issue. I would advise contacting a repair person before this problem gets worse.

Thank you,

Dorothy

SOURCE: Freezer not cold enough; fridge OK

Hello cokoliso,
Welcome to Fixya

You said, your Trio won't make ice. Freezer stays at about 25 degrees regardless of control setting. Fridge maintains 40 degrees at mid setting. Shouldn't the freezer be close to zero? Is there a way to check the temperature sensor in the freezer?

To check the temperature you can buy a refrigerator thermometer at the hardware store.
Ask if it can be used in the freezer too!

The fridge sounds slightly to cold and the freezer not enough.
Fist look in your freezer and check if the articles there are full to the max and covering the air vents usually found in the rear of the freezer. If so clear an opening for the freezer to breath.
Refrigerators and freezers usually share the cold air and I've seen this be the problem on many occasions.
If freezer was not I blocking the vents or even full to the max.

Then pull the plug out or if you can not reach the plug, trip the breaker off for 5 minutes and see if this resets the system.BUT do not plug the fridge back in before at least 3 minutes.

Let me know how it goes and send me any questions.
Thank You, Huuum

Amana bottom freezer temp 16 below. Turn temp down a little temp goes to 20 above

With that kind of spuratic actions I would strongly lean toward that the temperature control, also know as the cold control , is probably malfucntioning. Before I can 100% call that fact I would need more inforamtion, model number the most important. Also, a description of how the machine looks on the inside, like frost on the wall, ice, etc.

My wife posted the information below and I would like to add more to the story: We have two identical Amana Bottom Freezer Refrigerators, Model:BRD18V2S installed in our Kitchen. Both fridges are in an alcove and stand next to each other. One fridge is used as the beverage fridge and othe other is used as a food fridge. At about 10pm she noticed that an entire bottle (600ml) of Gin had cracked and emptied into the refrigerator section of the fridge used for beverages. We do not know how long the spilled gin was in the fridge. She mopped it up and we went to bed. At 7am the next morning, the beverage fridge and its freezer were showing 71 Degrees F. and everythind including the ice had melted. (We have aftermarket external temperature gages that show the fridge/freesor temperatures) The food fridge uninvolved with the gin spill was reading 68 Degrees F

Fridge side won't regulate temp. however the freezer will freeze to -9 and stay right there! How do you test the thermostat? or is this a common problem. The fridge was built in 01' and nothing has been...

the thermostat is either off or on, and it controls the fridge temperature the freezer is just a by product of the remaining gas from the fridge usually -20/30 degrees lower than the fridge, two problems would cause this leaked gas would reduce the cooling capacity of the freezer but the fridge should stay ok although the compressor would be constantly on trying to keep temperature. the thermostat can fail after time not being able to keep a regular temp and not switching the compressor on enough to cool the system. unless you have a frost free where is usually a relay that controls the compressor witch have a life time rating of so many operations.

check the defrost thermostat , and any temp sensor that can determine the freezer temperature.
If this fridge temperature is electronically controlled, the freezer control board must also be tested.

Refrigerator is warm @ 60 degrees and the freezer is still freezing happens every so oftern

http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

CHECK THE FREEZER TEMP FOR ZERO DEGREES. PUT A THERMOMETER IN THE FREEZER THAT WILL MEASURE DOWN TO ZERO DEGREES. LET IT SET OVER NIGHT BEFORE CHECKING. IF THE TEMP IN THE FREEZER IS ZERO OR LOWER, THE SEALED SYSTEM IS O.K. IT IS AN AIR FLOW PROBLEM. ON SOME MODELS, THE AIR TO THE FRESH FOOD COMPARTMENT IS CONTROLLED BY AN ELECTRIC, MOTORIZED AIR DAMPER. IT COULD BE DEFECTIVE, STAYING CLOSED WHEN THE CONTROL CALLS FOR MORE COLD AIR. IF YOUR REFRIGERATOR HAS A DIGITAL CONTROL, THERE IS A SENSOR IN EACH COMPARTMENT TO TELL THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL WHAT THE TEMP IS. THE SENSOR (THERMISTOR) COULD BE BREAKING DOWN, GIVING A FALSE READING. THIS WOULD ACCOUNT FOR THE TEMP VARIATIONS.

IF THE FREEZER IS ALSO WARM, THERE COULD BE A RESTRICTION IN THE SEALED SYSTEM. THERE COULD ALSO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE RELAY ON THE COMPRESSOR, NOT ALLOWING THE COMPRESSOR TO START UP WHEN IT IS NEEDED.

BE SURE THE CONDENSER FAN MOTOR IS RUNNING WITH THE COMPRESSOR AND THE CONDENSER COILS ARE NOT PLUGGED WITH DUST, DIRT OR FOREIGN OBJECTS.
