It completed one update but it automatically ran again saying "A previous firmware update has failed and the device needs to be recovered by a new firmware update attempt. Now it is just spinning with no progress for hours.

You simply need to hold the button down for a long time, it will flicker blue at first, don't let go of the button, and it'll turn blue for pairing.

You're probably not actually flashing the firmware, but downloading the utility to do so. Follow these steps:
1. Quit all other open applications. Open the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware update which is in your Utilities directory
2. Click Shut Down in the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to shut down.
3. Press and hold the power button on your MacBook Pro until the power indicator light flashes repeatedly, then release the power button to begin the update.
A status bar indicates the progress of the update.
Important: Do not interrupt the update.
Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.
4. Click OK, if the firmware is now up-to-date.

Obvious it's a software problem.I strongly recommand downgrading from the OFFICIAL SITE or a trusty one the previous version that you had before or you could try 1.3 1.2 untill you find a working one.
