The lock is a small silver slide switch located on the side of the unit labelled as "HOLD". Slide that back to the right.

I loved that mp3 player, it's a great basic one. Anyways...

To unlock it, it require nothing related to your computer, it's on the side of your player, the old button.

Near the mic. I believe right now it's on a side with orange, tick it to the side that shows white. Open it again, should be unlocked.

Unlock never used player
Hello,

Is the orange color above the Lock switch visible on the left side of the player ? Then it is in Lock position (factory set to Lock).

To unlock: Switch the Lock switch upwards (orange color not visible).
Next before first use, charge the player for 3.5 hours on a computer
with the provided USB cable.

Why would my philps lock up and wont release the unlock at times.
There is a hold/lock switch on the player - you need to unlock it. Refer to your user's manual in order to see a picture of where this hold/lock switch is.

How to release screen lock
Hello bsureshmkr,

If you have locked your iPod and cannot remember the unlock code you will need to use your iTunes software to unlock the MP3 player. Connect the player to the primary computer you use to add music to the iPod. Then start iTunes and synch the player as normal. When you are done synching and disconnect the iPod from the computer it will be unlocked.

There should be a lock/unlock button on the opposite side of your mp3 player other buttons. Slide the button to the left, and it should unlock. I hope this helps.
