SOURCE: Data Recovery from Seagate Desktop Expansion 500GB External Hard

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.
https://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.

SOURCE: Can I leave my Seagate expansion external hard plugged in

Hello

Yes, you can leave the device plugged in, you do not need to unplug it if you turn off the computer, do remember to safely remove when you plug it out though.

Kind regards
Andrea

SOURCE: I have a Seagate Expansion Harddrive 500gb. When

The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Computer doesn't recognize hard drive

Is the drive greater than 2TB and you are using a 32-bit operating system? If the drive is greater than 2TB, you need a 64-bit operating system to be able to access it as a single drive. Right click on My Computer. If it doesn't say, it is probably a 32-bit operating system.

Hi I have a 3tb ext harddrive - the led is flashing and my computer won't read the drive files

A single MBR physical drive is limited to 2TB in Windows. This is a common setup. You will need to break down and partition the drive in order to use it.
