SOURCE: My 9N Ford Tractor won't start with a new 6volt battery.

No water in the distributor or wires ... right? Spray with a popular water inhibitor and/or dry with a rag and or air pressure.

How do you tell the difference between a 6 volt coil and a 12 volt coil on a ford 9n tractor

if you have a way to test OHM , a 6 volt coil should be around 1.5 ohm and a 12 volt would need to measure around 3.0 ohm..Don't know how accurate , but it should give you some indication

Ford 9n converted to 12 volt alt still 6 volts at dis. runs rough till i jump 12 volts to coil and then it runs good. Will this damage coil and points?

If you are doing 6 Volts at the distributor you must either have Resistor wiring or a separate resistor in the system. They make both 6Volt and identical 12Volt coils for your unit.

You will eventually burn up a 6Volt coil if you use 12Volts on it. There is an aftermarket company which has Antique supplies. Carpenter(Maybe John) has supplies for Tractors, cars and trucks that are earlier models.

Do a Web search using his name and marry it to Tractor parts, etc.

Should i have a continuity reading from the power lug on my 9n starter to the frame? i have removed the slipcover and the armature turns freely but when i put a battery charger set on jump across it it...

is this 6 or 12 volt? also is this positive ground or negative ground? if you pull the starter and put it on a bench ( lets say this is neg ground and 12 volts) put red charger clamp on the post and touch the black clamp to the casing (where it bolts up) it should turn over. things would be hooked different if its 6 volt or if its pos ground

My 2n tractor only puts out 3-4 charging. The

The 12 v conversion is the way to go. 6 v is a pain. It's getting harder and harder to get parts, and running off of battery power leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you've ever had to haul a dead battery back to the barn. I had a Farmall model "B", 1947, 6 volts. 12 volts was like a whole different tractor. Just my humble opinion!

No spark to my ford 9n tractor

you are in the wrong place that is the battery regulator. go to the distributor and pull the cap where you see the four spark plug wires. Inside you will see a set of points and a condenser. there you should have 12 volts. Get back to me after that. donnyb60
