This is going to require some testing with a volt meter. If you have one and some knowledge of how to use it, I may be able to help. The voltage regulator is responsible for putting voltage and current to the "excitation winding" in the generator. You will need to check for a blown fuse at the regulator, to start.

Your generator may be putting out a square wave instead of a true sinusoidal (sine) wave.
There is usually a circuit in the microwave which monitors the AC line for timing purposes, and a square wave may not be interpreted correctly.
I would consult the manual or contact the manufacturer or installer.

remove the covering panel and expose the internals , check for loose/disscontected push on ( lucar ) connectors , if these are fine it is most likely the excitation capacitor is deffective , replace with exactly the same value/voltage rating/duty cycle . the capacitor is usual 1 or up to 3 cylindrical tubes with 2 wires comming from them , always take a note of exactly what wires you have taken off :) hope this helps
SOURCE: Same problem, generator kicked in after power outage,
At the point the transfer switchis suppose to transfer put a dc volt meter across terminals 23 and 194 in the transfer if you do not show 12VDC. Then you have a relay hanging upon the PCB board in the generator, need to replace board. If you are showing 12VDC and the switch is not transferring the problem is in the switch itself.
