Nikon D70 does not download images to memory card

Try to clean the contacts of the memory cards and, mostly, of the memory card bay of the camera. Use a dry anti-static fabric (e.g. what we use to clean eye-glasses). DON'T use any liquid cleaner of anything like that!

The largest CompactFlash card that Nikon approved for the 5700 is 256MB, which is what I'm using in my 5700. That's small by today's standards and you probably won't even find it in stores. I see some web sellers have 256MB cards for only $6 or so. Other commercial card sellers on the web claim that the 5700 will handle CF cards up to 1GB capacity. That's what I might try since online they're selling for as little as $8 plus shipping. Given that the 5700 was introduced in 2002, any cards bigger than 1GB probably won't work.

STOP! You have just bent a few pins. Your camera has a male connection. Meaning it has pins sticking out. If you are unable to insert a memory card, that means a pin is bent and is not going into the holes in your memory card. This is a common problem with cameras that accept a compact flash card. This can be an easy fix or it can be a very hard fix.

Ive fixed a couple of cameras like this with a pair of tweezers. flash light (or some big source of light) and a magnifying glass. You need to look into the slot on the camera under light and look at all the pins sticking out. Look for the bent pins and use the tweezers to bend them back. Be careful not to keep bending the pin back and forth, as this will break the pin off. Ive seen cameras work without certain pins, but this is not something you want to do.

To have an SLR fixed is a minimum $160 dollars depending on where you take it too. The D70 is a good camera.

Please do not stick the memory card back in. Check the memory card to make sure all the holes are clear and have nothing blocking the holes or make sure a hole has gotten bigger and merged into one. I would use a different card once the pins are are sticking straight.

This is easily solved.
Most probably the camera's USB connection mode is set to PTP. This is useful for certain situations such as controlling the camera from the computer (you even take photos from OS X's built in Image Transfer).
Change this to "Mass Storage" in the camera settings menu and your camera will behave just like a card reader. Next time you connect it to the computer, plug it it, then turn it on and it will appear on the desktop and in the sidebar as an attached drive.
Don't forget to eject it before disconnecting just as you would an ordinary external drive.
