Mostly only a certified weight will weigh exactly 1kg and most other goods purporting to weigh 1kg will actually weigh that amount plus or minus a tolerance, depending on the goods.
The suitability of something to calibrate a scale with will depend entirely on how accurate the calibration is to be. I think 1 litre of water at room temperature weighs 1kg but I suggest you take advice about that.
What software are you using? I use Microsoft Word to print my Avery labels, and quite often have to tweak their templates by simply adjusting my margins on the page. I do a 'select all' and then add one tenth of an inch at a time until the proof sheet looks just right. If the labels are a bit off, you can also adjust the pitch in the label options dialoge.
