SOURCE: Bernina 930 where to put oil

There are two key points I suggest customers can do themselves to help lengthen the life of their machine. One is your hook and the other is the needle bar...
Hook - Open your bobbin door, removee the bobbin case/bobbin. On the upper left corner there is a small latch, push in the latch and your shuttle race ring will fall down forward. You can now remove your stainless steel hook. You need to keep this hook clean and the lip it fits back into clean and void of lint and debris. On the back of this hook or the "lip" that the hook fits back into apply a small amount of hook/sewing machine oil.
Needle Bar - Open up your head cover, the needle and needle bar clamp is attached to a long stainless steel rod that travels vertically inside your head. All sewing machines have a needle bar that looks like this. This bar travels thru two brackets attached to the frame of the machine. Rotate your handwheel and clean the needle bar well of debris. Rotate the handwheel so that the needlebar is in it's highest point and apply a small amount of oil to the upper and lower bracket of the frame, rotate the handwheel so the needlebar slides back down and therefore lubricating it and the inside of the brackets.
Hook oil or sewing machine oil is relatively inexpensive from all quilt, sewing machine, repair shops.

Be sure to take your machine in a minimum of every three years for proper cleaning and lubricating of all the other parts (This is of course for average home sewing machine use 8hours a week)

SOURCE: Zig Zag Stitch not working

THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.

SOURCE: bobbin cover door is stuck on Bernina 930 Electronic, and won't open. Can you help me?

Tricky !!! I dont know why the door is stuck, but its possible that the spring-loaded plunger in the top of the bobbin door is stuck into the cover of the free-arm. If there is suficient gap between the top of the bobbin door and the free-arm cover, you could try sliding a thin piece of metal or a very small flat-bladed screwdriver between the two, in the dead-centre of the bobbin door - that's where the plunger is located. By gently manouvreing the screwdriver in, you might be able to release it - be careful, because it's possible that the retaining circlip has dropped-off the bottom, in which case, the plunger and its pressure spring might fly out when the bobbin door opens. If that doesn't work, you could try unscrewing and removing the stitch plate and, again, with a small flat-bladed screwdriver, see if you can release the free-arm cover catch that's next to the top-left-hand-side of the bobbin door, but that's a very risky approach, because the feed-dogs will be in the way and you dont want to mangle any of the hook/shuttle parts etc. You need to find out why the bobbin door is not seated properly - it may be that the bottom hinge that also carries the hook/shuttle retainer has come out of the left-hand hinge mount in the free-arm. Good Luck.

SOURCE: Bernina 930 foot control cord

Not easily - the plug is molded-on so it's best to get a complete new cord - they're still available.

SOURCE: sewing machine wheel won't turn, motor whirrs

So it sounds like the motor is working but nothing happens? And the hand wheel works ok by hand but nothing when the motor is engaged.

You've broken a belt. I'm not familiar with the 930, but if it has an internal motor... take it in to have it done. It's way too easy to knock these out of time. Spend the extra cash and have it cleaned lubed and adjusted too.

Bernina 930 Record presser foot lever won't move. On the inside you can see the shaft going up and down but nothing happens to the presser foot. It is currently in the up position but won't go down.

I suspect the machine has seized due to lack of regular oiling. The old oil turns to varnish and acts like glue preventing the parts from moving freely.

CAUTION: your 930 has a basting stitch that will tend to lock up if it is accidentally oiled (or if it hasn't been used for a long time). AVOID applying oil to the middle of the take-up bar (right next to the basting stitch dial behind the case)! A frozen basting stitch is evident when the needle is at its highest point and will not descend.

My bernina 930 speed has basically came to zero. the wheel is turning but the needle is moving very slow and even stops moving even when the wheel is turning. what could be the problem?

Um, how long since the last clean and oil? Sounds like the machine has seized due to old dry oil preventing things from moving. Avoid using the machine until the problem is addressed or the motor may be damaged. (Do this and you will be surprised at how nicely your 930 will run!)

I am looking for a bernina 930 service manual. I dropped the feed dogs and they will not come back up.

Most likely they have seized due to lack of regular oiling. I have used the following method on several older seized Berninas with great success. Just be sure to NOT get any oil near the 930 basting stitch mechanism (about the middle of the needle bar) or it will most likely lock the machine.

This is a diagram for the Bernina 830 Record, but it will give you a good idea of what & where to look for oil ports.

Bernina 930 change needle position

Look at the knob which creates the zig-zag stitch (1-4) at the top right of your 930. In the center of that is a silver knob that rotates right and left. That silver switch moves the needle position right and left.

How can I fix the needle assembly on my Bernina 930 Record...it all of the sudden doesn't move up and down?

There is a screw-in "hub", a round thingie, to tighten on the end of the machine, in the middle of the big spinning wheel. Hold the wheel and turn the hub clock-wise to tighten it ("Righty-Tighty, Lefty-Loosy).

It may be a bit tight to start with, they can "jam" open. Just turn it firmly as needed.

The reason the hub tightens and loosens is so you can run the machine quite fast when filling a bobbin up with thread without having all the gears and werkin's clatter as you do so.

I have a Bernina 930, 1987. My blind hem stitch (green #2) and green #1 will sew like green #3. The stitch on the left will make 3 stitches instead of 1 stitch. I have taken the top off and am wondering...

How long has it been since you've performed a thorough cleaning and oiling of your 930? These older 930 are great machines but they do need regular TLC to keep them operating smoothly. It could be the old oil has dried and is causing the stitch selector to stick.

I've used the following process to remediate several older Berninas, as well as regular maintenance on my 930:

Bernina 930

Have you ever done a thorough internal oil of your machine? These mechanical machines rely on oil to keep moving but, over time, that oil dries and starts to stick things together. I do a deep internal oil about annually and oil the hook at least every 8 hours of sewing.

Needle won't move on Bernina 930

If the machines motor is running but the needle isn't going up and down then the baste stitch finger is gummed up and needs to be serviced.  This is a simple fix and it happens all the time on those machines.  Take it to your local Bernina dealer for a standard service.  Also if you really need it in a pinch try pushing up on the needle bar that sometimes will fix the problem but it will still need serviced.
