there is no capacitor in 3 phase motors. if you are trying to tun 480 motor on 240 or 208 there is a wiring plate on motor, perhaps you should not attempt this., you do know that the amperage will increase if you run lower voltage.

What alternator does your model have? Marathon? Stamford Newage? if you have a 3phase motor it will only run using 3 phase power no matter what voltage or you can get a phase converter but they are pricey and varies with what horsepower your motor is

You cannot wire a three phase motor for single phase and you cannot wire a single phase motor for three phase. If you have a three phase dual voltage motor your options are 220 or 440 volts. If you have a single phase dual voltage motor your options are 120 or 240 volts. A 208 volt Hobart motor will only function correctly on 208 volts and is not dual voltage.

If the unit is single phasing this is not good for the compressor. Does the system have a phase monitor? If not I would suggest you put one in to save thousands of dollars on the replacement of the compressor. How is the oil level? I ask because this are not to run themselves out of oil.

A normal 2phase 220 or 240 V unit usually requires
2 wires and a ground. If you know what a contactor
is you will notice that only two line voltage wires can
be inserted into it and the ground wire to the equipment ground.

If you have a 3phase unit you would need 3 wires and a ground. Usually on the back cover of the unit it will
show the wiring diagram

There should be a diagram inside on the wall of the unit where the jumper bars are, where you change voltage connections.
