SOURCE: refrigerator not cold enough

Hi Tin Man!
You may have identified the problem with the frosted over freezer coils... are they to the point of being ice encased? In addition to cooling the freezer, this is also the primary source for the refriferator cold air... I would try defrosting the unit again, with it disconnected from power, try and go longer this time, with the doors open.
When you power back up, reset both temp settings to mid-range (5) and let it run at least 8-12 hours to stabilize... try to avoid opening the doors too much while it cools down, and see how it does.
If it still doesn't cool down sufficiently, you may have damaged air control port flaps, not allowing the cold air introduction into the fridge compartment.
This could also be a control/sensor issue, i.e.: the setting knob is malfunctioning, or the temp sensor might be bad, as could the electronic controller.... in other words the info source and control system that directs how the flaps are opened and closed might be at fault.
Refrigerators have become much more sophisticated since the advent of the microchip, but the basics still apply... just try and use the process of elimination to isolate the problem.

Hope this helps and good luck!

SOURCE: I have an Amana bottom

If the coils were really dirty, the compressor is probably just overheated. Let it cool down overnight then try again. If it still won't stay running it needs serviced. Could be the start relay or internal overload/overheat sensor in the compressor. If the coils were really dirty and it was used like this for a long time, the compressor could be damaged. It is almost never worth replacing a compressor in a home refrigerator.

SOURCE: Bottom of freezer/fridge only getting cold.

Thre is a fan inside the freezer which circulates the cold air around both the fridge and the freezer compartments.
You should be able to feel cold air blowing around the inside, particularly at the top of the freezer.
If the defrost thermostat fails open, the internal fan (depending on freezer) will stop and this can be the cause of the freezer being warm at the top and no ice.
You say the bottom of the freezer is blowing cold, but are you sure its blowing, as it can feel like a cold blow. Of course the fan could have failed or may be the defrost heater itself.
Have a look at this site for some useful trouble shooting

A amana French door fridge no fan water or.icemaker lights come on but no fan turning on or cold

Many Amana model fridges have the freezer fan wired through the bi-metal thermostat that is clipped to the evaporator. Either your compressor has a bad start device and that is why it is not cooling, or the compressor IS running and the unit has lost its refrigerant charge. Running compressor with no cooling = buy a new fridge.
Compressor hot, but not running = start relay replacement to get the compressor going. Start Device 8201786

Freezer dying first, fridge failing...

Is the compressor running. also check to see if the fan next to compressor is running. They should both run at same time..is the compressor fan running and compressor not? Could be the compressor start relay. Next, is there frost buildup on inside back wall of freezer? If so u may have a defrost control out or defrost heater or defrost terminating thermostat out. Greg

Amana bottom frezzer refrigerator

Gazzo, You are on the right track. I've been finding a lot of compressor failures on these Amana's. It's possible that the overload and relay for the compressor failed, but Im more inclined, from what I've seen, that the compressor is the problem. The compressor is covered under warranty, parts and labor for 5 years. I would call for warranty service...Catriver...post back.
